Pedestrians and Bicyclists Continue to Be at Risk for an Accident

September 30th, 2011

Two separate fatal accidents involving a pedestrian and a bicyclist this week in Los Angeles, have again underscored the lack of respect for the rights of these persons.

The first accident involved a bicyclist and the driver of a pickup truck in Long Beach. The accident occurred on Saturday. The bicyclist was riding his bike on Carson Street at about 11:50 PM when he was struck by a pickup truck, which was being driven in the same direction. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are still seeking information about this accident. The driver of the pickup truck was 70 years old.

The same day, a pedestrian was killed in an accident in South Los Angeles. The 39-year-old man was walking on Broadway near 92nd St. at about 10:30 PM on Saturday, when he was struck by a Chevrolet. The Chevrolet driver fled the scene. The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene. Police are seeking information about this crash too. You have to wonder how it’s possible that a motorist could strike a pedestrian in a front-impact collision, and not even notice it.

For California injury lawyers however, this was just another day in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department really should be focusing harder on the rights of pedestrians and bicyclists in the city. There is little information about how the bicycle accident took place, but in the case of the pedestrian accident, it’s unforgivable that the motorist could simply drive on, without even bothering to check on the person he had just knocked down.

When it comes to bicycle safety, much depends on the attitude of motorists toward bicyclists. Motorists in Los Angeles are getting more accustomed to seeing more numbers of bikers on the streets. However, instead of a greater understanding of each other’s rights, there seems to be an atmosphere of barely concealed hostility. Motorists must respect bicyclist rights. More people are taking to biking in California, not just because of the fitness benefits involved, but also because it is exceedingly convenient in a city like Los Angeles with nightmarish traffic. If anything, we should be encouraging more bicyclists in Los Angeles to relieve the city’s congested traffic. That doesn’t seem to be happening at all.

Los Angeles also doesn’t seem to have a great record in pedestrian safety. Many accidents are linked to motorists, who are in too much of a hurry to get to their destination to bother about niceties like slowing down at a crosswalk, or stopping to let a pedestrian cross the street. Always look out for pedestrians when you near a crosswalk. If you see a pedestrian, slow down, and stop till the pedestrian finishes crossing the street. Look out for pedestrians especially closer when you’re at busy intersections where pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur. Remember, a pedestrian is at a high risk of serious injuries if he is involved in an accident with your vehicle.
