15 Passenger Van Rollovers

Fifteen-passenger vans pose a particularly high risk of rollover accidents. The problem is so severe that some insurance companies will no longer insure 15-passenger vans.

Between 1990 and 2002, there were 1,576 15-passenger vans involved in fatal crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these crashes resulted in 1,111 fatalities to van occupants. Of these, 657 vans were in fatal, single vehicle crashes, of which 349 rolled over.

Heavily loaded 15-passenger vans are particularly susceptible to rollover accidents. NHTSA research shows that the rollover risk of 15-passenger vans increases dramatically as the number of occupants increases from fewer than five to more than ten. Vans with ten or more occupants have a rollover rate nearly three times that of vans with fewer than five occupants.
