Search Continues for Driver in Fatal Los Angeles Motorcycle Accident

December 2nd, 2009
A motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries in an accident in Los Angeles this week.  The accident occurred on Monday at 120th street and South Main Street.  The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
According to the Los Angeles police department, the motorcycle was struck by a van which was heading west on 120th street. According to SCPR.org, the van driver ran a red light and hit the motorcyclist. The van then took off.  Police are describing the van as a white 1980 Dodge with a blue stripe down the middle.  The driver has been described as a black male. The van is likely to have sustained some damage in the crash.  Police are calling on anyone with any information on the van to contact them immediately.
California motorcycle accident lawyers have been greatly concerned about the continued high rates of fatalities in motorcycle accidents. While the state has been able to bring down fatality rates in other kinds of accidents, it faces great challenges trying to limit motorcycle accident fatalities. That rate has been mirrored in a nationwide trend, in which motorcyclist fatality rates have actually been increasing faster than the rate of registrations of new motorcycles. For a long while, motorcycle safety advocates and California personal injury lawyers believed that these high fatality rates were the result of more number of motorcycles on our streets. Although greater motorcycle use continues to be one of the factors contributing to these high numbers of accidents, it is not the only factor. California motorcycle accident attorneys believe that there are a number of contributing factors that have caused this spike in fatalities.
Nationwide, there has been very little focus on studying the causes of motorcycle accidents, and how to prevent these.  The last extensive study into the causes of motorcycle crashes concluded in 1981, with the Hurt’s Report which gave lawmakers and law enforcement the information they needed to devise accident prevention strategies. Since then, there has been no such extensive study into motorcycle crash causation. Last month however, the Federal Highway Administration announced the launch of a new study into motorcycle accident causes.  The study will take a while to be complete, and motorcycle safety advocates hope that it leads to solid data that can be used to develop accident prevention strategies.
Modern motorcycles are not the clunky machines of three decades ago. These days, motorcycles are lighter, sleeker and more powerful. This could be a factor in the increasing number of crashes.
There is also an increase in the number of motorcyclists above the age of 45 on California’s streets. Older motorcyclists on powerful machines can be a deadly combination.
California’s motorcyclists also face challenges staying safe on streets that are increasingly used by distracted drivers. Motorists distracted by cell phones could be another factor that researchers need to take into consideration when they try to understand the high rates of motorcycle fatalities.
