NHTSA Looking for Greater Authority to Prevent Accidents from Defective Automobiles

In the wake of the Toyota crisis, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found itself under severe criticism. The agency now says that it will seek higher powers for itself to set safety standards for vehicles and to investigate defects in automobiles and trucks.

NHTSA Upgrades Investigation into Ford-150 Airbags after Reports of Injuries

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded and expanded its investigation into dozens of complaints that airbags on some F-150 pickups deployed suddenly and without warning, leading to injuries. The investigation has been updated to an engineering analysis, which may be the last step before a recall is announced. However, there is no indication that a recall of Ford pickups is in the works. Last year, the NHTSA had launched a preliminary review of 2005 pickups. The updated investigation now covers pickup trucks of model year 2004 to 2006.

Toyota May Spend $5 Billion to Replace Accelerator Pedals Possibly Related to Uncontrolled Acceleration Accidents

California car accident lawyers are no strangers to automakers who either continue to live in a state of denial about defects in their vehicles, or unwilling to admit that there are defects that could cause accidents. So it was no surprise when Toyota Motor Corporation delayed the announcement that it would be recalling approximately 3.5 million of its vehicles because of floor mat issues that could cause unintended acceleration.

Ford Issues Massive Product Recall of 4.5 Million Vehicles

This week, Ford issued the largest recall in its history, when it announced that 4.5 million vehicles could be at risk for a potential fire hazard because of a faulty switch.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this the 8th recall related to Ford’s cruise control deactivation switch.  With this recall, the total number of Ford vehicles recalled because of these issues with the switch, have touched a total of 14 million vehicles.  The fault lies with the switch that is prone to overheating and can cause a fire.

Toyota Tundra, Ford F-150 Pickup Trucks under Investigation for Rust, Defective Airbag Issues

It’s been a busy week for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency has launched separate investigations into vehicles from two of the country’s biggest automakers, for separate and very serious defects that could pose a possible risk of accidents.

Major General Motors Class Action Lawsuit to Settle

General Motors is bracing itself for a 49 state class action lawsuit that’s expected to be worth anywhere from $80 million to $150 million for car owners.

In the case of plaintiff’s attorneys, the settlements could be worth up to $16.5 million.

Ford Recalls 225,000 Vehicles for Wiring Defects

There’s more recall trouble for Ford. This time the automaker is recalling 225,000 vehicles, and the problem is in the wiring in the vehicle. Apparently, the wiring is defective, and doesn’t stop fuses from shorting out while in use. So far, no accidents or injuries have been reported because of this wiring problem, but we should not take that to assume that the danger from these wiring defects is negligible or no cause for worry.
