If a proposed new bill goes through, bicyclists in California will be subjected to the same hands-free cell phone use laws that apply to motorists in the state.
A new piece of legislation proposes extending the ban on text messaging or use of a hand-held cell phone while driving to California’s bicyclists. The legislation has been introduced by Sen. Joe Simitian, who was the man behind California’s law banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. Sen. Joe Simitian has introduced a piece of legislation that would heavily increase fines and penalties on violators of the hand-held cell phone and text messaging while driving bans.

Bicyclist Killed in Fatal Accident in Covelo
A bicyclist has been killed in an accident in Covelo. According to Redwood Times , the bicyclist was riding a 21-speed mountain bike. He seems to have veered into the path of a car being driven by woman. The bike struck the car, throwing the rider off his bicycle and on the windshield of the car. He was thrown into a nearby drainage ditch. He sustained fatal injuries, and died at the scene of the crash.

Search on for Hit and Run Driver in Compton Bicycle Accident
Authorities in Compton are still continuing their search for a mini van driver who struck and killed a bicyclist, and then drove off from the scene. The accident apparently occurred on Monday, and once again underscores the lack of respect for bicyclist rights in Los Angeles and California.

Los Angeles Considering Law to Protect Bicyclists from Road Rage-Related Accidents
A new law proposed by the Los Angeles transport chief promises a series of measures that will impress bicycle safety groups and California bicycle accident attorneys.
The law has been proposed by the Chairman of the City Council’s Transportation Committee, Bill Rosendahl. Under the law, it will become an offense for motorists to harass bicyclists. The proposed law is on the agenda for a bicycle safety session of the Transportation Committee to be held soon. Other items on the agenda include an increase in bicycle parking provisions in new developments, and an increased rollout of sharrows or “share lane” arrows. The committee will also look at bike sharing schemes in the city, as well as conflicts between cyclists and motorists.

San Jose Tackles Accident Risks of Bicyclists with Leashed Dogs
In September, a San Jose resident died when she got entangled in a dog leash as she was walking down a trail. The dog was being pulled along by a bicyclist, when 62-year-old Beverly Head got entangled in the leash. She fell, and stuck her head on the pavement, sustaining serious head injuries. She was rushed to the hospital, but died the next day. The accident has San Jose authorities considering how to deal with the issue of bicycle riders with leashed dogs.
