Anti Drunk Driving Campaign in Sacramento County Gathers Steam
Sacramento has a dubious record as one of the many cities in California with a severe drunk driving problem. According to Dr. Leon Owens, who is the founder of the Teachable Moment Foundation, the city ranks number one in drunken driving accidents and injuries out of 13 major metropolitan areas in California.
The Teachable Moment Foundation aims to battle that problem with a new campaign that reaches out to youth in the state. The campaign has its own website called every37.com, and will make use of social marketing efforts to reach out to young motorists who are so often the victims of drunk driving accidents. Dr. Owens’ inspiration for the campaign came from his own loss. His son was killed in a drunk driving accident. The campaign kicked off in December 2008. Every37.com is based on the fact that every 37 minutes somewhere in the United States, a person dies in an alcohol-related car accident. The campaign is designed primarily to impact men between the ages of 18 and 35 who are most at risk for drinking and driving.

New Legislation to Return Right to Sue Device Makers
When a Supreme Court ruling in February 2008 declared that the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a medical device would grant civil liability immunity to the medical device maker in the event of injuries caused by the device, it essentially eliminated a person’s right to seek justice in case of such injuries. Now however, patients who have been injured through the use of FDA-approved devices have a ray of hope. Democratic legislators are reintroducing laws that will seek to nullify the 2008 ruling and grant patients the right to sue device makers again.

Rainy Weather Leading to Hundreds of Accidents in California
Heavy rains have lashed much of California in the past few days, leaving roads slick with rainwater, and a number of traffic accidents in their wake.
Rainstorms led to the closing of major roads connecting Los Angeles, including the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles, and Interstate 15. Two female passengers escaped with moderate injuries in a van-bus accident in Cerritos south of Los Angeles on Monday. The two women were traveling in a minivan when the accident occurred on a wet road. In Orange County, the slippery wet roads have led to dozens of accidents. There have been accidents leading to injuries on the southbound Interstate 5 as well as at Brea Canyon Road. Rollover accidents have been reported on the northbound 405 and the south bound 57 freeway. Roads have been blocked by crashed vehicles on the 405 freeway in Costa Mesa, northbound 57 at Lambert Road and on the 5 freeway in Anaheim.
