Yet Another Fatal Accident on Angeles Crest Highway

August 16th, 2011
Another fatal accident in the Angeles Crest Highway

The highway is know for its beautiful sights but also for being dangerous.

There has been yet another fatal accident on the Angeles Crest Highway, the fourth fatality since the scenic stretch of highway was opened for use just a few weeks ago.  Already, Los Angeles car accident lawyers are concerned about the high numbers of accidents on this highway in just a few weeks.

The most recent accident occurred on Saturday, when a driver lost control of his car and overturned.  The driver of the car was killed.  According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred just north of Mount Wilson-Red Box Road.

It has been just a few weeks since the Angeles Crest Highway was reopened to the motoring public.  This stretch of winding highway had been closed down from January 2010 to June 2011 because of highway repair works.  The highway had been severely damaged because of heavy rain.

However, in just a few weeks after the highway was reopened, there were three fatal accidents.  One of them involved a motorcycle and two involved single vehicles.  According to the California Highway Patrol, all the accidents involved vehicles traveling at excessive speeds.  In this most recent accident, the California Highway Patrol does not know whether excessive speed was a factor.

The Angeles Crest Highway had earlier been involved in similar safety concerns, these involving commercial trucks.  From April 2009 to June 2009, the highway had been off-limits to tractor-trailers and 18-wheelers after a devastating accident killed two people.  A truck carrying cars went out of control as it came down Angeles Crest Highway and entered La Canada Flintridge.  The truck crashed into several cars, on a busy La Canada Flintridge Street.  By the end of the carnage, two people had been killed and more than a dozen people had been injured.  The truck driver in that accident is currently on trial.

The California Highway Patrol is asking motorists and motorcyclists to exercise caution when they travel on the Angeles Crest Highway.  This is a stretch of road that has several accident hazards, and driving at excessive speeds on this highway will only amplify a motorist’s risk of an accident.  Many of the accidents that have occurred in the past few weeks have been traced to speeding drivers.

The California Highway Patrol is specifically looking at the dangers to motorcyclists on this stretch of highway.  The agency has stepped up its enforcement of motorcyclists on the Angeles Crest Highway.  This scenic stretch of highway has long been a magnet for motorcyclists.  Additionally, the numbers of motorcyclists on the Angeles Crest Highway increases because summer also happens to be peak motorcycling season.  During the last weekend of July, the California Highway Patrol issued at least 150 warnings and cited more than seventy-five motorcyclists for violating speed limits.
