Work on Dangerous Highway 101 Road to Begin Soon

August 22nd, 2011
The work on the highway is set to begin soon.

The work on the dangerous road is set to begin soon.

An ambitious road widening project along the Dangerous Highway 101 will not only help ease congestion, but will also make the road safer.  The California Transportation Commission last week allocated $131 .6 million for the widening of Highway 101 near Mussel Shoal and La Conchita.

The project will expand the highway from the current four-lane road into a six lane freeway.  A high occupancy vehicle / car pool lane will be added on both sides.  There are also plans to construct a bike path along the dangerous highway 101 road.  Work on the project is expected to begin in early 2012.  Construction is expected to be completed in four years.  When completed, the road is expected to ease traffic congestion, and also eliminate dangerous left-hand turns.

Dangerous roads are a much overlooked factor in car accidents.  A Los Angeles car accident lawyer may find a road or highway dangerous because of a number of factors.  A road may be badly designed, or may suffer from faulty construction.  The road may not have been maintained properly.  Sometimes, although a road may be perfectly safe for years, it may become unsafe after the demographics of the area change.  According to studies, many accidents that involve single vehicles running off the road can often be traced to poor road design.  Additionally, accidents that involve a single vehicle striking a stationary object can also often be traced to dangerous road design.

Broadly, a road or highway can be said to be dangerous if it includes any of the following defects:

  • Too sharp curves
  • Hazards which create an obstruction
  • Hazards which block visibility
  • Dangerous drop-offs like ravines and valleys
  • Too short exit or entrance ramps
  • Poor drainage that causes slippery street surfaces
  • Poorly positioned highway signals
  • Lack of adequate warning signs
  • Lack of visible signs
  • Design that includes dangerous slopes and dips
  • Missing or broken guardrails

Often, a road may be properly designed, but may suffer from shoddy construction or workmanship.  For instance, contractors may fail to follow the design of the road.  They may use substandard materials in the construction of the road, causing wear and tear, and exposing workers to the risk of accidents.  However, even the most well designed and constructed road must be neatly maintained in order to serve motorists.

When roads are not maintained, the results can often be serious.  Lack of maintenance can cause roads to quickly develop potholes, rendering them dangerous.  Guardrails must also be maintained well, to ensure that they are strong and stable.  Additionally, a road or highway must have sufficient illumination.  There must be adequate numbers of well positioned highway traffic control lights.  All painted markers must be clearly visible.  All signs and warnings must be well-maintained and visible.
