Wheelchair Accident in San Francisco Accident

Wheelchair Accident

Many pedestrian accidents occur when people cross the street

A person in a wheelchair has sustained serious injuries in a wheelchair accident in San Francisco.  The man was apparently crossing the street on a crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck.

The accident occurred at about seven in the morning, when the victim was crossing the street in his wheelchair.  He was crossing the street when the traffic light turned green, signaling that motorists could drive on.   Most of the drivers who had stopped for the light, waited for the wheelchair user to continue crossing the street.  However,  One pickup truck accelerated and struck the wheelchair.  The person in the wheelchair has suffered serious injuries, and is reported to be in a critical condition. Police don’t believe that the man driving the pickup truck was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The increasing risk of accidents facing pedestrians in California has been a concern to Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyers for a while now.  California has never been a pedestrian’s paradise, but it seems like standards for pedestrian safety have been dropping further.

Most pedestrian accidents in California can simply be avoided if motorists focus their attention on the task of driving, and eliminate all distractions.  It’s much easier to miss a pedestrian than to miss another car, which is why motorists must be focused on avoiding pedestrians.  Many pedestrian accidents occur when people cross the street, as in this case, on a crosswalk.  Other accidents occur when pedestrian cross at corners.  These areas are pedestrian-accident magnets, and drivers must take care to avoid pedestrians in these areas.

Driver must also take care to avoid accidents involving pedestrians at nighttime.  Drive carefully in pedestrian-heavy areas, and look especially hard for people who are wearing darker clothing.

Pedestrian accidents are some of the most injurious accidents that a person could be involved in.  Even a moderate-impact pedestrian accident can leave an individual with serious or life-threatening injuries.  Brain injuries are common injuries that result from pedestrian accidents.  Pedestrians are also much more likely to suffer serious neck or spinal cord injuries.  A spinal cord injury can leave a person with limited mobility or movement, and in severe cases, a person may suffer from paraplegia or quadriplegia.  Paraplegia is the inability to move the lower limbs, and quadriplegia refers to a loss of sensation or movement in both upper and lower limbs.

Pedestrians can also do their bit to avoid accidents.  Avoid distractions while walking.  If you’re walking at night, wear light or brightly-colored clothing.
