Wading Pools are a Serious Drowning Hazard

July 29th, 2011
Kiddie pools are fun but can also be dangerous for kids.

Kiddie Pools can be a serious drowning hazard.

According to a study, wading pools, which are generally believed to be safe for little children, can pose a serious drowning hazard to children.  The study shows a high risk of drowning accidents involving children in these pools.

The results of the study have been published in Pediatrics journal.  The use of these portable wading pools is a significant risk of death to children below the age of five.  The researchers analyzed fatal and nonfatal drowning incidents involving children below the age of 12 in portable pools across the United States.  The data came from the Consumer Product Safety Commission database between 2001 and 2009.

The researchers found that there were a total of 209 fatal drowning incidents in the wading pool.  There were a total of 35 nonfatal drowning incidents between 2001 and 2009.  An overwhelming majority of these or 94% involved children below the age of five.  Boys tended to be the most often involved in drowning incidents and wading pools, accounting for 56% of these incidents.

Besides, most of these wading pool-related accidents occured in people’s own homes.  Approximately 73% of these incidents occurred in the child’s own home yard.  Not surprisingly to Los Angeles pool accident lawyers, most accidents occurred during summer, accounting for 81% of all incidents.  This is the first study that has been done on swimming pool accidents involving wading pools.

According to some estimates, every summer, a child dies every five days after drowning accident in a portable pool.  Additionally, few of these cases involve parents who were not present at the scene or were not supervising.  In fact, in most of the cases, parents were supervising their children, but took their eyes off the children for just a few seconds.

The risk of accidents involving wading pools also increases because safety devices are not easily available, or very expensive.  In fact, for many people who own a portable pool, the cost of the devices sometimes is more than the cost of the pool itself.  Not surprisingly, many people ignore protection devices for wading pools or portable pools, with sometimes serious consequences.

This summer, Los Angeles pool accident attorneys would advise that parents exercise extra caution when their children are playing in portable pools.  These pools are easy to set up and easy to assemble, and may be less expensive than an in-ground pool, but you still need to take the same precautions that you would in a larger pool because they are a serious drowning hazard.  According to experts, it isn’t enough merely to sit by the side of the pool and glance at the children from time to time.  It’s important to be in the pool, so that the child is just an arm’s length away from you in an emergency.
