Volvo Airbag Recall Affects 113,000 Cars

Volvo Cars has announced a recall of 113,600 cars across the world for potential problems with airbag systems and steering systems.  According to a spokesman for the company, at least 100,100 of these vehicles have been recalled because of a possibility that the airbags won’t function.

The Volvo airbag recall involves a defective wiring connector that could cause airbag deployment to fail.  The models affected by the airbag recall are the S80, S80L, S60, V70 and XC70 as well as the XC60.  Most of the recalled vehicles were sold in Sweden, while about 9,753 Volvo cars in the US have been affected by the recall.  Owners of the vehicles have been asked to take their vehicles to the dealer for a free fix.  The fix takes about a half-hour.

If you own a vehicle included in the Volvo airbag recall, visit your local dealer immediately for a fix.  As California product liability lawyers know, airbag deployment failure can be a serious problem that increases the risks of injuries after a crash.

Besides, the company is recalling approximately 13,500 vehicles for power steering hose problems.  These vehicles were mainly sold in China.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company has issued a reminder over previously recalls for a defective cruise control system.  This isn’t a new recall, but the company is reminding owners of the vehicles that were recalled because of the cruise control problem, to get it fixed.  Some of the recalls date back to 1999, and include more than 17.5 million vehicles over the years. Many of these are sold under the Ford, Lincoln, Mazda and Mercury brands.

The reason for the reminder is that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is concerned that some of these cars will be resold in the used car market.  Owners of these used cars may not be aware that their Ford vehicles come with a defective cruise control that would increase the risks of an accident.  Besides, even if the owners are aware of the Ford recall related to the cruise control system, they may not be aware if the vehicle has been repaired or fixed since the recall.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is therefore calling on all owners of Ford vehicles that are included in the recall, to visit their local Ford dealer, and get their vehicles fixed.

If you want to know whether your Ford has been included in the recalls, simply visit the Ford website, and enter the Vehicle Identification Number.  This number can be found on your car’s dashboard.  You can also find it on the certification label on the door next to the driver’s seat.

Look out for the following warning signs of a failure of the cruise control system.

• You find it difficult to activate your cruise control.
• Your cars brake lights stop working.
• You notice no brake fluid.
• Your cars brake lights stop working.
• You find it hard to get your Ford vehicle out of park mode.

The cruise control system problem is believed to be related to a switch that can possibly overheat and burn, causing a fire.  Some incidents have involved Ford vehicles that have burst into flames, even when the engine was turned off and the car was parked.
