motorcycle hit-and-run accident

A motorcyclist in Ventura sustained serious injuries in what the California Highway Patrol is describing, as a hit-and-run accident.  The motorcycle hit-and-run accident occurred last week, and involved a motorcycle and a sports-utility vehicle.  There are no further details about the accident, but the motorcyclist sustained serious injuries, and was rushed to the Ventura County Medical Center.

Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that there had been a decrease in the number of people killed in fatal motorcycle accidents across the US.  There was a decrease of about 850 fatalities in motorcycle accidents compared to 2008.  That makes it a drop of about 16 % over 2008. There was also a drop of about 6.3% in motorcycle accident-related injuries, compared to 2008.

In all, in 2009, there were 4,462 reported motorcycle accident fatalities.  Of these fatalities, approximately 1,314 involved alcohol-impaired motorcyclists or drivers.  There were 96,000 motorcycle accident-related injuries in 2008, and that number dropped to 90,000 in 2009.

This decrease however, cannot be attributed to low motorcycling as experts have believed.  In fact, they were more numbers of motorcycle miles traveled in 2009 compared to 2008.  According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, motorcyclists traveled approximately 5% more miles last year, and in all, they traveled approximately 1.3 million more miles than in 2008.  2009 was the first year that there was a decline in motorcycle accident fatalities after 11 years of nonstop increases in such deaths.

The statistics have encouraged California motorcycle accident lawyers, motorcyclists and highway safety agencies.  However 4,000 motorcycle accidents is still too many.  A drop in fatalities during a single year cannot be taken to mean that there has been a dramatic improvement in motorcycle safety.  We will have to see the figures for 2010, before we can begin to pinpoint any possible factors that could have contributed to this decline.

However, it is important that we try to determine any possible factor that could have contributed to a drop in motorcycle accident fatalities in 2009, and try to replicate these in future years.  Whether it’s motorcycle awareness and education training, motorcycle safety training courses, or educating motorists about motorcyclist rights, it’s important that highway safety agencies understand what works to keep motorcyclists safe.

As the accident in Ventura shows, too many motorists remain unconcerned about the safety of motorcyclists.  We need better education of drivers, including awareness about lane sharing policies in California.  California is the only state that has not made the practice of lane sharing illegal, and many believe that this is the cause of so many motorcycle accidents.  Yet many drivers continue to be taken unawares when a motorcyclist moves into their lane.  We need to address this issue more strongly.
