University of California San Francisco To Add Seatbelts on Buses

The University of California will soon add seatbealts to all their buses to prevent serious injuries in case of an accident.

The University Of California at San Francisco will soon add seatbelts on buses to prevent serious injuries in an accident.  The decision to install seatbelts in all buses at UCSF comes after a fatal accident involving a shuttle bus that killed a professor.

The accident occurred earlier this month when a group of University of California at San Francisco employees were headed to work.  The shuttle bus that they were riding in collided with a tractor-trailer in the early hours of morning.  A University of California San Francisco psychiatrist was killed in the accident.  He was ejected from the bus, and sustained fatal injuries.  At least three persons on the bus were also injured.

Investigations after the accident have concluded since that the doctor would likely have survived the accident if the bus had come with seatbelts.  A seatbelt would have restrained him in his seat and prevented the kind of ejection that occurred here, contributing to his death.  Partial and complete ejections are very often seen in bus accidents, and these play a major role in bus accident fatalities every year.

Since the fatal accident, the University of California San Francisco has been consulting with auto safety experts and determining ways to prevent such accidents in the future.  University officials have been meeting with shuttle bus drivers in order to understand ways in which they can make riding in these buses much safer for passengers.  University officials have been stressing on the safe driving practices that are included in the University of California at San Francisco driver training program.  The University will also be introducing a telephone hotline that will encourage bus riders to give feedback about their riding experience.  The hotline will be promoted soon to encourage riders to give feedback about their bus experience.

The University of California at San Francisco is also launching a complete review of all shuttle operations and is also calling on a number of agencies, including other universities, and transportation agencies for their recommendations in keeping bus passengers safer .

One of the major changes that the University of California San Francisco is making to its fleet of shuttle buses is the installation of seatbelts in all its buses.  The University intends to have its entire fleet equipped with seat belts by the end of August.  Los Angeles bus accident lawyers have strongly supported the installation of seatbelts on buses, to reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries when buses are involved in accidents.

Very often, fatal or serious injuries are caused when a passenger is partially or completely ejected from the bus during a accident.  This very often happens during a bus rollover accident.  Seatbelts can prevent such injuries.  The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended the installation of seatbelts on buses for decades now, but the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has delayed action in this matter.
