A woman and her 16-year-old grandson were killed in a La Mesa drunk driving accident

A woman and her 16-year-old grandson were killed in a La Mesa drunk driving accident caused by a suspected intoxicated driver.  The accident occurred on Route 125 in La Mesa.

According to the teenager’s mother, her 73-year-old mother and her 16-year-old son were on their way to a dentist’s appointment in Tijuana, when their car was rear-ended by a vehicle being driven by an intoxicated motorist.  Both their car and the other motorist’s pickup truck burst into flames.

The other driver managed to exit his truck and avoid injuries.  Witnesses at the scene tried to drag the woman and her grandson out of the burning car, but the flames were too hot.  The woman and her grandson were trapped in the car, and died.  According to witnesses at the scene, the pickup truck driver was more worried about the damage to his truck, than the 2 people trapped in the burning SUV.

For the family of these 2 victims, it is suddenly turning out to be a horrible holiday season.  Unfortunately, San Diego car accident lawyers expect the number of such accidents involving drunk drivers to simply increase in the weeks ahead.  The numbers of motorists, who are reckless, or driving under the influence of alcohol, are likely to increase as we get closer to the final days of the year.  Unfortunately, these are also the most traffic-heavy days of the calendar, which means that a motorist’s risks of being involved in a drunk driving accident are at their highest during this time of year.  Most motorists this season will be driving safe and sober.  However, as any San Diego car accident lawyer will tell you, there will always be drivers who are too reckless to take a taxi home, or ask someone to drive them home.

This holiday season, it will not be entirely possible to avoid drunk drivers on the streets.  However, you can increase your chances of surviving an accident by wearing a seat belt at all times.  Get everybody in your car to wear seatbelts too.  Ensure that the children in your car are also restrained properly in car safety seats or booster seats depending on their age and weight.  Avoid driving under the influence at all costs.  If you must drink, avoid driving, and hire a designated driver service instead.  Take public transportation, call a cab or stay overnight at the venue to sleep off the alcohol.  Make sure you switch off all distractions at the wheel.  More numbers of motorists are expected on California’s roads, and even the slightest inattention could prove devastating.
