Two Motorcyclists Killed in California Truck Accident

motorcyclists killed in California

Even a helmeted motorcyclist may not be able to completely avoid a serious or fatal injury

Two motorcyclists killed in California last week in an accident on the 5 freeway.  The two were riding their motorcycles when both vehicles collided with a semi truck.  The two motorcyclists were run over by the 18-wheeler.

The two victims, a fifty-one-year-old man from Marina del Rey, and a 38-year-old woman from Torrance died at the scene of the accident.  The accident occurred during a charity motorcycle ride fundraiser called the Love Ride.  According to police, the victims were riding ahead of the Love Ride motorcyclists.  The organizers of the Love Ride Foundation say that they have never had a fatality in twenty-eight years of conducting the charity ride.

Motorcycle accidents are the most serious of all traffic accidents, because they almost always result in serious injuries or death.  In any accident involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle, it’s the motorcyclist who is at a much higher risk of being killed or seriously injured.  Even a helmeted motorcyclist may not be able to completely avoid a serious or fatal traumatic brain injury.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a motorcyclist is up to eight times more likely to suffer injuries in an accident.  He’s also 36 times more likely to be killed than occupants of automobiles.

What makes motorcycle safety a particular area of concern for Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyers is the fact that these accidents have actually been increasing over the years.  Motorcycle accident deaths have been increasing over the last decade, even as traffic accident fatalities involving other vehicles have declined.  Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded the first drop in motorcycle accident deaths in more than eleven years. However, that decline in motorcycle accidents could have been due to the fact that there was a dip in recreational motorcycling due to the recession.

There have been a number of reasons for the increase in fatal motorcycle accidents.  For one thing, the motorcyclist demographic has undergone a sea change.  Back in the 70s, it was the young and reckless who preferred to zip around on motorcycles.  In 2011, there are a large number of people in their 40s and 50s who have discovered the thrill of motorcycling.

Unfortunately, in many cases, these people are not adequately trained to handle motorcycles.  In other cases, these motorcyclists were avid riders a couple of decades ago, and have returned to motorcycling not realizing that modern motorcycles are much more powerful, and therefore, much more dangerous than before.
