Trouble in Toyland Report Alerts Consumers to Dangerous Toys

Trouble in Toyland

The biggest toy-related concerns are the presence of potentially toxic chemicals

Consumer watchdog group, US Public Interest Research Group has published its annual Trouble in Toyland report in time for the Black Friday shopping extravaganza.  The 26th annual survey of toy safety was released this month, and alerts parents, consumers and San Diego defective products lawyers to toys that are dangerous and toxic to children.

According to the report, the biggest toy-related concerns are the presence of potentially toxic chemicals, or toys that come with choking, strangulation and noise hazards. The survey found at least 2 toys whose lead levels exceeded the current 300 ppm standard which has been set by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.   The surveyors also found at least 4 toys that exceeded the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation for lead content in children’s toys, which is not greater than forty ppm.

The Trouble in Toyland report also found a number of toys that had phthalates in them.  These are toxic chemicals that can cause serious reproductive injuries in male children.  Phthalates are typically added to plastic products in order to soften them.  These are also found in a variety of children’s and household products.  There have been numerous studies conducted to establish the dangers from the exposure of children to phthalates.  According to studies conducted by the US Environment Protection Agency, there is substantial danger from phthalates exposure, including reproductive harm and premature delivery.

Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, toys that contain three types of phthalates are banned.  The Act also sets strong limits on at least three other types of phthalates.  No toys or children’s products can contain more than 1000 ppm of each of the six phthalates that are sold in the American market.  However, the Trouble in Toyland survey found at least 2 toys contained 42,000 ppm and 77,000 ppm levels of phthalates.

According to the survey, between 1990 and 2010, more than 200 children died from choking-related incidents.  The survey found several toys that exceeded the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s choking hazard regulations.

Further, the survey found one toy that exceeded the recommended continuous exposure 85-decibel limit.  At least two toys exceeded the 55 dB limit.  Noise hazards can be very harmful for children.  According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, approximately one in five American children will have some degree of hearing loss by the time they reach age 12.  This could be in part because of the toys that they use in childhood.
