Toyota Recalls More Vehicles Due to Stuck Gas Pedal

It feels like 2009 all over again.  Toyota has once again announced a massive recall of millions of vehicles for the same sudden unintended acceleration issues that the company has grappled with for close to two years.  This time, the company is recalling 2.17 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles that were sold in the US.  According to Toyota, the problem with these vehicles is that the floor mat could jam the car’s accelerator pedal, possibly causing unintended acceleration.

According to Toyota, the recall involves the following vehicles.

  • GS 300 and GS 350 of model year between 2006 and 2007 –  Approximately 10,000 of these models are being recalled.
  • RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h vehicles of model year between 2004 and 2006 -  Approximately 372,000 of these cars are being recalled.
  • Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles of model year 2004 through 2006 -  Approximately 603,000 of these cars are being recalled.
  • Lexus LX 570 of model year between 2008 through 2011 -  Approximately 17,000 of these cars are being recalled.
  • RAV4v of model year between 2006 through 2010 – Approximately 761,000 of these cars are being recalled.

According to Toyota, the carpet and floor mats in these vehicles could trap the gas pedal, causing a stuck gas pedal.  This could cause unintended and sudden acceleration of the vehicle.  The recall comes after an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This recall is the latest in a series of earlier recalls ordered for the same sudden unintended acceleration issues.  Not all of these vehicles suffer from the same defect.  The potential defects in these vehicles are different, but they all have the same effect – they have the potential to entrap the gas pedal, possibly leading to unintended acceleration and loss of control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation last spring into the earlier stuck gas pedal recalls.  The agency analyzed hundreds of thousands of pages of documents from Toyota, and then made the decision that Toyota should increase the scope of the October 2009 recall for unintended acceleration, to include the new models.

With this latest recall, the number of Toyota vehicles recalled since 2009 for sudden and unintended acceleration and a range of other problems, has crossed 14 million cars.  Most of these recalls have been linked to the sudden and unintended acceleration problem, which Toyota continues to blame on sticking floor mats.  Toyota continues to face hundreds of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits arising from the sudden unintended acceleration problem in its vehicles.  Besides, the company is also facing thousands of consumer fraud and economic damage lawsuits in both state and federal courts.  California injury lawyers maintain that the sudden and unintended acceleration problem has been caused by electronic and mechanical defects in the vehicles.  Toyota continues to insist that there is nothing wrong with the electronics in its cars.
