Talking Cars Could Reduce The Risk of Car Accidents by As Much As 40%

Talking cars will help avoiding these horrific accidents

There’s been a lot of progress on the auto safety front over the past decade, and Los Angeles auto accident attorneys are very pleased to see that new barriers are being broken in the quest to keep motorists safer in accidents every year.  Now, scientists claim that they’ve developed software that will allow vehicles to communicate with each other, thereby reducing the risk of car accident.

The claim comes from scientists at the University of Bologna who say that they have developed software that allows cars to actually talk to each other.  Not only that, the researchers also say that the software can help reduce the risk of accidents by as much as a staggering 40%.  So, how do exactly these cars talk to each other?  Most Americans who grew up in the 80s will remember the KITT talking cars from the Knight Rider series.  This software, however, will be quite different.  The new-generation talking cars would be connected to each other through mobile WiFi.  They will use acceleration sensors to alert each other about possible accident scenarios.  For instance, when a car involved in another accident and experiences a change in velocity, the sensors will immediately alert other cars in the proximity about this change.

This talking car technology is different from the current forward collision warning systems and Lane departure warning systems that are becoming more and more popular on automobiles.  These systems rely on radar to detect an object or person that is right in front of the car, and alert the motorist to the risk of an accident.  However, the new software will detect possible accident situations that are miles ahead of the motorist.

Currently, the program is only being assessed through computer simulators.  However road tests are due to begin soon.  The city of Los Angeles is due to be one of the venues for tests that are to be conducted in collaboration with Toyota.

At this point in time, there is little that we know about how effective this system will be in preventing accidents.  However, the researchers are very optimistic about the potential for prevention of accidents using these systems.  They believe that as many as 40% of all auto accidents can be prevented by using these talking car technologies to allow vehicles that are miles apart from each other to communicate with each other.

Regardless of whether this technology takes off or not, Los Angeles car accident lawyers would not fail to be encouraged at the growing importance that researchers and auto manufacturers seem to be giving to auto safety.  The need for making cars that can not only prevent accidents, but also protect occupants better from injuries in the event of an accident, has never been acknowledged more strongly.
