CPSC Intensifies Efforts to Prevent Swimming Accidents

It has been one of the worst summers that California swimming pool accident lawyers have seen in recent years.  Halfway into the summer and there has already been 210 drowning and near-drowning incidents involving children across the country.  All of these were swimming accidents.  The numbers have been serious enough for the Consumer Product Safety Commission to intensify its programs to enhance pool safety and prevent such swimming accidents.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has collaborated with Safe Kids and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, to kick off a new pool safety campaign.  The collations of groups are creating a new educational program revolving around swimming pool safety.  The main components of the program will be a series of educational videos to educate children about pool safety.  The videos include simple safety tips that all children must be aware of to ensure their safety around pools and spas.  Children can learn about unsafe activities around pools, spas, backyard pools, hotel pools and community pools.

The entire program is based on an interactive platform, which encourages children to learn about dangerous settings and identify potential hazards in their environment.  The video features the voice of actress Ming Na, who provided the voice for the lead character in the Disney film, Mulan.  The program is designed for use by both children and parents.  The program is meant to be used by children below the age of seven, one of the highest at-risk groups for drowning incidents.  The videos are available on YouTube as well as the websites of Safe Kids USA and National Drowning Prevention Alliance.

California pool accident attorneys would encourage parents to use the program in order to develop safer habits among their children.  It’s also important that parents themselves learn about what they can do to prevent a drowning death in their own home.  Most child-related drowning deaths occur not in natural water bodies, like lakes and rivers, but in residential swimming pools.  It’s a fact that should concern any parent or caregiver, but unfortunately, California pool accident lawyers often find that parents tend to be blasé about simple safety in their own home, but will take precautions in a hotel or other facility..

Since Memorial Day alone, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of more than 210 child drowning incidents, involving fatal and nonfatal submersion.  These are some of the highest numbers in recent years, another serious concern to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  Early this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics revised its guidelines, which had earlier required that children below the age of four not be given swimming lessons.  The group modified those guidelines to say that swimming lessons could possibly be a factor in preventing drowning deaths among children between the age of one and four.  However, the lessons on their own may not prevent drowning or submersion incidents.  Parents must be vigilant when their children are in or around a pool at all times, and the pool and pool area must be equipped with door latches, pool safety alarms and pool covers.
