Swimming Accident Prevention Tips for Summer

Swimming Accident Prevention Tips

More than 200,000 people are injured every year in pool accidents

Why you need to pay attention to the swimming accident prevention tips? According to data by the Consumer Product Safety Cushion, more than 200,000 people are injured every year in pool accidents, and these injuries are serious enough to require medical attention.  Additional data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 10 people die every day in unintentional drowning incidents.  That is not even counting the number of people who die in boating accidents every year.  Out of these 10, at least two fatalities involve children below the age of 15.

There is little further proof that California swimming pool accident attorneys need to demonstrate how important it is to prevent drowning-related incidents this summer.  Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that drowning is the second biggest cause of death involving children below 14.  Approximately 80% of all drowning accident victims are males.

The New York Times is taking Californians through a list of steps that they can take to keep themselves and their loved ones safe this summer.  The biggest piece of advice that the NYT and Los Angeles swimming pool accident lawyers give is to make sure that children get swimming lessons as early as possible.  In fact, earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that children between the age of one and four could benefit from having swimming lessons.  It is a major shift for the American Academy of Pediatrics, which earlier had recommended that swimming lessons only begin after the age of four.  However, the group no longer opposes swimming lessons for children between the age of one and four.

However, this doesn’t mean that if your child has attended a few swimming classes, he is perfectly safe to be left alone in the water.  Whether your child knows swimming or not, children must be supervised in the water at all times.

An overwhelming majority of drowning deaths involve children in residential pools.  Your pool must be fenced on all sides.  Make sure that all emergency gear, including resuscitation equipment is kept pool side and easy for you to reach during an emergency.  Your pool must have depth markers.

Swimming safety is just as important for adults as it is for children.  If you are swimming in natural water bodies, never swim alone.  Always take an experienced swimmer along.  Never swim in isolated areas.

Always wear life jackets in the water at all times.  Unless you’re an expert swimmer, never swim in rivers.  Even if you’re familiar with the currents in the area, there may be other obstacles that you’re not aware of.

Children must be supervised in the water at all times by an adult who is a good swimmer, and is trained in CPR.

Never swim after drinking alcohol.  Never swim in the dark.

Never swim in an unsafe area on a dare.  It’s these kinds of risky behaviors and stunts that often cause accidents and contribute to fatalities
