Summer Driving Tips for Teen Motorists

Summer Driving Tips for teen motorists

Make sure that your child is not driving with teenage passengers as long as he's holding a provisional driver's license

The Wall Street Journal has some summer driving tips for anxious parents whose children will be driving this summer.

For some parents, the three months of summer can be the season for worry. These are parents of teen motorists who have just received a provisional driver’s license. It doesn’t help that these motorists, who are already young, callow and inexperienced, may be sharing the roads with some of the most congested traffic at any time of the year.

If your child has just got a provisional driver’s license, it’s not necessary that you go out and buy him/her a new car. Auto safety experts do suggest buying new cars that come with safer features, but it will help you maintain control over your child’s driving if he/she is driving the family car. Your child will not be excited about being seen driving  in his parents old wheels, but if he/she is driving the family car, you have a better sense of where they’re going, and when they’re expected back. You may not have the same kind of control when your child is driving his own car.

Auto safety experts advise – there is no need to feel guilty if you’re not willing to splurge on a new set of wheels for your child. A teenage motorist must be made to understand that driving is a privilege, and a new car is not necessarily a rite of passage to which he is entitled.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also says that parents who have good responsible driving record themselves, are more likely to pass on these good habits to their children. Bad driving habits are easily transferable to teen motorists. So, stay within speed limits and switch off your cell phone while driving, and you can be sure your child is likely to do the same.

California’s Graduated Driver Licensing laws require a parent to accompany a provisional license holder. Take this time to teach your child as much as you possibly can about safe driving. You have years of experience that can benefit your child, and this is the best time to pass these tips on to your teen motorist.

Make sure that your child is not driving with teenage passengers as long as he’s holding a provisional driver’s license. This is not always easy to do, but as a parent you have every right to set strict rules. Driving with teen passengers in the car is not only illegal for your provisional license holder, but can also contribute to a serious accident.

In 2009, the number of teen motorists killed in fatal accidents dropped from the previous year. It was not a substantial drop, however, and every year, auto accidents continue to be the single biggest cause of teen deaths. More than 44% of teen fatalities every year occur in car accidents.

California car accident lawyers always stress that parents have a big part to play in ensuring teen motorist safety. Unfortunately, many parents assume that driving is something that their child will learn to do better with experience, and fail to set limitations on the child. The consequences can be tragic, just for the teen motorist, but also for other motorists on the roads.
