Study Finds Fatigued Driving High among Fleet Drivers

Fleet drivers, including company and van drivers are just as much at risk, or even more at risk of being involved in accidents, compared to motorists. A new study just out of the UK find that these motorists may be especially at risk for fatigued driving.

The survey involved more than 450 company car drivers, and the researchers found that close to half, or 47% did not take adequate breaks while on their journey.  Only 37% of the drivers admitted that they would take a break after driving for about 3 hours.  That is at least 50% longer than the recommended time between breaks.

About 6% of the persons in the survey said that they would only stop for a break after driving for 4 straight hours, while 4 percent said that they wouldn’t bother to stop to rest at all on a long trip.

This shows that many commercial company van drivers are taking the risk of fatigued and drowsy driving very lightly.  There are other results of the survey that were equally concerning to California car accident attorneys.  For instance, the survey found that car maintenance issues were not a priority for many van drivers.  About 12% of the van drivers did not seem to know the legal minimum tire tread depth.  Most of them or 59% correctly identified the minimum legal tire tread depth as being 1.6 mm.  But at least 11% of the drivers did not know the minimum tire tread limit..

Oil levels should be checked every month, but about 9% of the drivers in the survey said that they checked their oil only once every year, and 15% of them reported that they did not check their oil at all.

One reason for this lax attitude towards fatigued driving and car maintenance could be the fact that many cars nowadays come with advanced auto safety technology, and as a result, drivers are probably becoming very complacent about driving.
