CPSC Recall: Stroller Amputation Risk

Sadly, this is not the first time California product liability lawyers have seen a stroller amputation risk. Recently, the Consumer Product Safety Commission had announced another recall because of stroller-linked amputations. This recall involves approximately 30,000 jogging strollers manufactured by Phil and Ted’s USA.

The recall comes after several reports of amputations involving adults who got their fingers caught in the mechanism of the stroller, while in the process of folding and unfolding the stroller. According to Phil and Ted’s, it has received at least three reports of incidents resulting in injuries to adult users. In one of these, at least one adult reported of an amputation, while two other adults reported lacerations to the finger.

The recall involves the sport v2 and classic v1 model single seat jogging strollers. The strollers come with a canopy, metal frame and seat. These strollers were sold at retailers between May 2008 and July 2010. The sport v2 model was sold in green, black, orange, red, navy, charcoal colors and graffiti prints. The classic v1 model was sold in red.

The serial numbers of the record strollers include 0308/0001 to 0510/0906. Consumers who have purchased these strollers are required to look for the serial number printed on the inside of the folding hinge. The stroller amputation risk recall also impacts parents and consumers in Canada.  Health Canada has also announced a recall of the same strollers.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, consumers must stop using the strollers immediately, and contact the company for a free repair kit and repair instructions that will be shipped to them. Besides, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is monitoring the number of injuries that have been linked to the use of the stroller. If you own a Phil and Ted’s jogging stroller, and have suffered injuries related to the hinge mechanism, or found any other hazards related to the same product, the Consumer Product Safety Commission wants you to contact the agency at saferproducts.gov, its new website.

Earlier this month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission made it easier for consumers to look up a complaint relating to a particular product by launching its new website, saferproducts.gov. The website is designed on the same lines as the safercar.gov that has been established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The main aim is to provide consumers a single website where they can access any complaints relating to a particular product. The website is part of the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s efforts to expand accessibility of safety information to all consumers.

Earlier, the process of recalling a product or informing the public about possible defects was long and cumbersome. Now, when the Consumer Product Safety Commission, receives a complaint about a potentially defective product, it forwards the complaint to the manufacturer. The manufacturer has a period of 10 days in which to respond. After the period of 10 days, the complaint will be posted on the website.

   It’s scary to hear of a product that is carrying your child can be that dangerous. I feel sorry for those unfortunate few who had one of these accidents and hope they hired a good lawyer to help them get all the compensation that they deserve.
