Spike in Children’s Holiday Product Recalls This Season

There was a major increase in the amount of children's holiday product recalls this year

In the holiday rush, many parents may have missed a number of important holiday product recalls involving children’s items this season.  These products have included everything from children’s robes and pajamas to teddy bears and strollers.

Earlier in the month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall for about 1,000 children’s robes distributed by Hanna Andersson of Portland, Oregon.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, these robes do not meet federal inflammability standards, and pose a risk of burn injuries to children.  The robes were fluffy white fleece robes that were sold at Hanna Andersson retail stores, and on the company’s website, between January 2011 and November 2011.  Customers who bought the robes are advised to return them to the retailer for a refund.

Around the same time, the Consumer Product Safety Commission also issued alerts for about 1,750 Petit Lem children’s pajamas for the same reason as the robes.  In this case, the Consumer Product Safety Commission stays that the pajamas also violate federal inflammability standards, and pose a potential burn risk to children.  The pajama sets are two-piece cotton shorts and cotton short-sleeved sleepwear sets, which come in a number of colors.  The pajama sets were sold between January 2009 and November 2009 at children’s retail stores.  Consumers who bought these pajama sets are advised to return them to the retailer for a refund or exchange.

Last week, Build-a-Bear Workshops announced a recall of more than 297,000 teddy bears, because of a potential choking hazard.  About 284,000 of the Colorful Hearts Teddy Bears were sold in the United States, and about 30,200 were sold in Canada.  The eyes of the teddy bears can come loose, and pose a potential choking hazard to children.  The toys were sold at Build-a-Bear Workshops stores nationwide as well as online between April 2011 and December 2011.  San Diego defective products attorneys advise parents to take the teddy bear away from children, and return it to the store for an exchange coupon.

Also this month, Bugaboo Bee Strollers announced a recall of approximately 7,250 strollers because of possible tipover hazards.  According to Bugaboo Americas, the recall is linked to a possible defect in the front swivel wheels that may inadvertently lock.  In such cases, the stroller may be at risk of a tipover, exposing the child to injury and fall hazards.  The strollers were sold at Toys “R” Us, Buy Buy Baby and other retailers across the country.  Consumers are advised to stop using the strollers immediately, and contact the retailer for free replacement swivel wheels.
