Southern California Has Record Increase in Bicycle Accident Fatalities This Year

August 12th, 2011
the number of fatalities in bicycle accidents is raising.

The number of bicycle accident fatalities seems to be headed to a record increase.

If things continue as they are, Southern California could see a record number of bicycle accident fatalities in 2011.  Some bicycling groups are already predicting a toll of 79 fatalities in 2011.

Southern California’s seven counties have seen an increase in the number of bicycle accident fatalities this year.  According to BikinginLA.com, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange Counties are currently on target to have an average of 7.4, 24.2 and 13 fatalities respectively.  The situation is similar in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Riverside Counties where there is likely to be a spike in bicycle fatalities this year.  San Diego is likely to see some of the steepest increases in bicycle accidents in 2011.  In San Diego County, there’s is likely to be a threefold increase in the annual average bicycle accident fatality toll, which is currently 6.8.

Bicycle safety in Southern California matters so much to Los Angeles bicycle accident lawyers because fatalities here account for a major portion of the total number of bicycle fatalities around the state.  Southern California has a large chunk of the state’s bicyclists, and also some of the least bicycle-friendly streets.

Bicycle accident fatalities are also likely to spike during summer, when there is an increase in ridership in California.  In fact, the Los Angeles Police Department has already warned about an increase in bicycling deaths in the summer of Los Angeles.

It’s no surprise to Los Angeles bicycle accident attorneys that so many bicycle accidents end in fatalities every year.  A bicyclist has the highest chances of being seriously injured in an accident involving an automobile, with the possible exception of pedestrians.  Even a bicyclist who survives an accident, may be left with fractures at the very least, and brain and spinal cord injuries at the worst.

This summer, try to increase your chances of staying safe in a bicycle accident.  Always wear a helmet while riding.  Stick to bike lanes whenever possible, and look out for motorists driving recklessly or pulling out in front of you.  Wear reflective clothing that makes you stand out on the road.  The point is to become visible to motorists, in order to avoid an accident.

Also look out for motorists opening car doors in your path.  Bicyclists who hit an opening car door constitute a major chunk of the bicycle accident fatality toll every year.  Also, avoid bicycling at night as much as possible.  If you have to ride at night, wear reflective clothing and stick reflective tape on your bicycle.  Avoid congested streets as much as possible.  Avoid distractions like listening to your iPod while riding.
