Sonoma City Council Decides against Legislation Banning Pit Bulls

Ban on Pitbulls

Better regulations are needed to prevent attacks.

The Sonoma City Council has decided against a legislation banning pit bulls, in favor of outreach programs and neuter programs in order to reduce the threat of dog bites.  Calls for more specific legislation against aggressive breeds had mounted after a ferocious attack involving a pit bull in Pacifica.

The incident in Pacifica occurred last month.  The 32-year-old woman was killed after a particularly horrific attack involving a pit bull.  The woman was pregnant at the time, and had been apparently attacked by the two-year-old male pit bull at home.  Initially, there was some confusion about the cause of her death.  The victim’s husband had returned home, and found her lying on the floor unconscious, and the male pit bull standing close by.  When rescue personnel arrived, the victim was not breathing and unresponsive.  The dog tried to approach police, and was shot and killed.

Later, autopsies concluded that the victim’s death had been caused by loss of blood from dog bites, and shock.  Additionally, tests conducted on the dog after the attack found that the pit bull had been involved in the attack.  Hair and tissue samples of the victim were retrieved from the dog.

The local community was horrified by the ferocity of the attack.  The tragedy spurred calls for a stronger legislation banning pit bulls and prevent such attacks.  Mayor pro tem Joanne Sanders asked the Sonoma City Council to consider a review of the current animal legislation.  This immediately resulted in a controversy, pitching safety groups and concerned citizens against pit bull advocates.

According to the, Sonoma City Code, dogs above four months old must be licensed and vaccinated for rabies.  The owners must maintain their animals within the property or on a leash at all times.  Further, owners of dogs that have been deemed as vicious, or violate leash laws must face fines of up to $500 and even imprisonment of up to six months.

Breed specific legislation may not serve any purpose.  The fact is that Los Angeles bite lawyers also come across many cases of dog bites involving other breeds.  However, it falls back on dog owners to ensure that their animals are kept on a leash, restrained on a property and unable to cause injuries to anyone.

Unfortunately, very often, Los Angeles dog bite attorneys find that the kind of people who prefer breeds like pit bulls for pets, don’t have the resources or the education to take care of these breeds properly.  A pit bull, for instance needs plenty of place to exercise, and owners must be prepared for a heavy investment in time in training the dog.  When the dog owner is not able to provide this level of training and exercise, it makes for an unhappy, and therefore, dangerous dog.
