Smartphone Burn Injury Treatment App Could Save Lives

A former British soldier has developed a Smartphone application that can be used to help out a person with their burn injury treatment.  The app has been developed by a former captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Chris Seaton is currently studying computer science at University of Manchester.  He was very concerned about the horrific burn injuries that he saw fellow soldiers suffering during combat.  He researched an application that could be used to reduce the percentage of errors during treatment of burn injury victims.  He collaborated with plastic surgeons and academicians, and came up with a smartphone application that dramatically reduces the incidence of errors while treating burn injury victims.

One of the most important factors in the treatment of burn injury victims is the administration of adequate fluids to a victim.  Burn injury victims can lose a substantial amount of fluids, depending on the extent and severity of the burns.  Typically, a doctor uses a pen and paper to calculate the extent of the injuries, and determines the amount of fluids that need to be administered.  Needless to say, the margin for error in such procedures is quite high.  It is also a time-consuming process, taking away precious minutes from a burn injury victim’s survival chances.

But the application that Seaton has developed allows users to feed in the burn injury patient’s burn area, his age and estimated weight.  The app immediately delivers the amount of fluids that have to be administered.  The app makes it easier to feed important data by providing a computer model of the patient’s body, and allowing the user to color the regions that have been burnt.  The user simply feeds in a person’s age and estimated weight to get the amount of fluids that have to be given to the patient.

In a combat zone, access to a doctor may not be immediate.  In such cases, soldiers who are nearby can use the app on their touchscreen phone, to determine the precise amount of fluids.

According to the researchers, the use of the smartphone app can reduce errors by as much as one third compared to calculation on paper.  A lot of time can be saved if doctors use the smartphone app while helping a patient with their severe burn injury treatment.  Most doctors use a touchscreen smartphone, making the technology more easily available.

Burn injuries are some of the most severe injuries that a person can suffer.  Most injuries that San Diego burn injury lawyers come across occur during household kitchen accidents, as a result of defective products or as a result of post-accident fires and explosions.
