Six People Injured in Van Nuys Accident

March 30th, 2010

Six people were injured in an accident involving a sports-utility vehicle and a car in Van Nuys on Sunday afternoon. Two people in the sedan were trapped in the vehicle, and had to be rescued. They are reported to be in serious condition. The four occupants of the sport-utility vehicle were also injured, including two children, one of who suffered a serious laceration to the head. Police are investigating the accident.

The causes of accidents have stayed pretty much the same over decades. Speeding and intoxicated driving continue to be two of the biggest factors in auto accidents in California. To that, California injury lawyers can also add distracted driving.

Speeding does not merely mean that a car is traveling at above the posted speed limits on a highway. Accidents can also occur when a car is traveling at speeds that are too high for the road, traffic or weather conditions.  A motorist must travel at speeds that are low enough to allow him to control his car in an emergency. For instance, a motorist driving in stormy weather, rains or strong winds must drive at lower speeds than normal. If you are planning to travel in bad weather, check with your local radio station to find out the safe speed limits on the road. If you can’t find any driving information for the road, use your good judgment to drive at speeds that are safe. Driving in congested traffic or during rush-hour requires you to be able to brakesuddenly, so drive at safe speeds.  Also drive at low speeds when you’re just behind a tractor trailer.

Accidents caused by speeding can have devastating consequences. The kind of force generated when two cars strike each other at high speeds, can cause serious injuries and deaths.

Drunk driving as a factor in auto accidents has been declining in importance. Even with this decline however, more than 1,000 people are killed in California every year from drunk driving accidents. An intoxicated motorist suffers from impaired judgment and lowered responses. Response times can be critical during an emergency when you try to brake suddenly or make other emergency maneuvers.  Besides, a drunk driver is much more likely to engage in reckless driving, and take risks while at the wheel. That’s part of the reason why drunk driving and speeding so often go together.

The focus of distracted driving these days seems to be on technological distractions in the form of cell phones and text messaging devices. However, the fact is that American motorists have been distracted ever since they began driving. Distractions can be in the form of billboards, or conversations with passengers in your car. Motorists may also be distracted because they’re changing radio stations, or reaching for a CD while driving. Crashes have been traced to motorists applying makeup and shaving at the wheel. Any activity that causes you to take your eyes off the road for even a few seconds, can constitute a major distraction, and increase your risk of an accident.
