Severe Burn Injuries in Children Linked to Higher Risk of Complications

severe burn injuries among children

A new study indicates that children who have suffered severe burn injuries could be at a higher risk of suffering complications, or even death.

A new study indicates that children, who have suffered severe burn injuries, or burns covering more than 60% of their body, could be at a higher risk of suffering complications, or even death.

That shouldn’t be news to any San Diego burn injury lawyer, but it does indicate the importance of preventing severe burn injuries among children.

The study has been published in The Lancet.  According to the study, children who suffered burn injuries that cover more than 60% of the total body surface area are at a higher risk of dying from their injuries, or suffering severe complications.  The researchers assessed about 952 children who had suffered burn injuries.  The children were aged between 6 and 10, and had been treated for their injuries at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston Texas between 1998 and 2008.

The children in the study had a variety of different types of burn injuries.  The children had suffered severe burns, which included injuries that cover 90% to 100% of the total body surface area, as well as those who had suffered less severe burns that covered between 30% and 39% of their total body surface area.

Out of these children, 13% or 123 children died from the burn injuries.  Out of these, children in the category that had suffered burn injuries over 30% to 39% of the total body surface area accounted for about 3% of the fatalities.  In contrast, children in the category which suffered injuries that covered between 90% and 100% of the total body surface area accounted for 55% of the fatalities.

Out of the children who suffered serious complications from the burns, 60% suffered multiple organ failure.  Out of these, just 6% were children who suffered burns to between 30 and 39% of the total body surface area, while 45% belonged to the category of children who suffered burn injuries to between 90% and 100% of the total body surface area.

9% of the children developed sepsis after they suffered burn injuries, and out of these, only 2% were in the category that suffered burn injuries to between 30% and 39% of their body surface area.  In contrast, 26% belonged to the category which suffered burn injuries to between 90% and 100% of their total body surface area.

Children who suffered burn injuries to between 90 and 100% of the total body surface area were 10 times more likely to die from their injuries, compared to those in the 30% by 39% burns category.
