Several Californians Missing in Mexico Boat Accident

Several Californians are missing after the accident.

At least one American has been confirmed dead in a Mexico boat accident and eight others are believed to be still missing.  The tourist boat capsized in the Gulf of California, throwing all occupants into the water.

There were a total of 27 American tourists on board, and most of them were from California.  The boat had 17 Mexican crewmembers.  The exact number of people missing still remains unclear.  However, most reports have pegged it as eight Americans missing.  The sole fatality involved a man from California.

The boat had set out to sea on Saturday on a fishing expedition.  The accident occurred on Sunday, when the boat ran into rough seas off San Luis Island.  The 115-foot boat quickly sank, and the occupants were left to the mercy of the seas.  There was no rescue boat coming for the tourists on the boat who were now swimming for their lives.  Some of them spent close to 16 hours clinging to life vests and trying to stay afloat.  Others swam more than 8 miles back to shore.

The search for the missing Americans is continuing.  Local fishing boats, the Mexican Navy as well as the US Coast Guard vessel are continuing the search for the missing tourists.  Hope for the survivors remains strong because of the calm seas.  Visibility remains clear, the water is warm, and there is reason for optimism about the chance of survival of the missing persons.

Considering the trauma that these people have been through, the survivors who have been accounted for are in good health.  One person who suffered from diabetes has been kept under observation, however.

There remain concerns about the health of the missing tourists, and how long they can stay alive in the water.  One of the biggest concerns is likely to be dehydration.  At this point, they have been in the water for several hours, without food and water, and swimming under the scorching summer sun.

Survivors have begun to give an account of what really happened.  Los Angeles boat accident lawyers have learned that there had been warnings that a dangerous storm was approaching the area.  In spite of this, the captain of the boat decided to sail on from San Felipe anyway.

According to a crew member, the port was actually closed because of the impending bad weather, with no vessels sailing in or out.  No Mayday call was issued when the boat ran into rough weather, and the Mexican navy had no way of knowing about the boat accident.  The Mexican Navy only found out about the accident, when one of its vessels ran into the boat operator as well as some other men who were clinging to life boats in the water.
