Fears of Salmonella food poisoning have led to a massive recall of cilantro by a California-based company

Fears of Salmonella food poisoning have led to a massive recall of cilantro by a California-based company.  The company, Pacific International has announced a voluntary recall of more than 6,000 cartons of cilantro after a federal inspection found traces of Salmonella in the cilantro.

According to the company, the Food and Drug Administration warned the company that traces of the salmonella bacteria had been found in certain samples of cilantro processed by the company.  The cilantro has not yet been linked to any reports of salmonella poisoning in California, or anywhere else in the country.  However, the company has chosen to recall 6, 141 cartons of the cilantro herbs.  The company is informing California consumers, who purchased the cilantro between November 16 and December 10, to dispose of it, or return it to the supermarket where it was purchased.

According to the company, the cilantro was distributed not only to retailers in California, but also retailers in Arizona, Massachusetts, Indiana, New Jersey, South Carolina and Missouri.  The bunches of cilantro have the name Pacific on the packaging.  The cilantro that has been potentially contaminated with salmonella comes with the UPC code 33383 80104.

The cilantro was packed and sold by a California-based company, but was grown in Arizona.  Experts are still trying to determine the source of the salmonella contamination.

Salmonella is one of the most common sources of food poisoning in the United States.  Salmonella organisms are most often found in the intestinal tracts of birds.  Contamination in human beings usually occurs through contaminated poultry and contaminated surface water.

Cross-contamination can occur when food that has been contaminated with salmonella is placed close to fresh or raw foods.  This is why San Diego food poisoning lawyers recommend that you use separate utensils, chopping boards and knives for handling meat, poultry and seafood, and separate utensils for fresh produce or foods that can be eaten raw.  Food processing workers and restaurant workers can also increase the risks of contamination when they are infected themselves.

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning include abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.  Few cases of salmonella poisoning are fatal.  In most cases, the infection will subside on its own in just a few days.  However, in other cases, the symptoms may be severe, and the person may be at a high risk of dehydration.  In such cases, the person must be given fluids, in order to make up for the lost fluids, preventing dehydration.  Some groups of people like the elderly, children and those with weakened immune systems or those who have just recovered from an illness, may be much more susceptible to salmonella poisoning.
