Safe Driving Habits This Memorial Day Weekend

Safe driving habits on memorial day

Safe driving habits are critical this Memorial Day weekend. As hundreds of thousands of Californians prepare to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend holiday, injury lawyers advise extra precautions and care while driving.

The California Highway Patrol will be out in full strength over the weekend. This year’s anti-drunk driving efforts over the Memorial Day holiday will be really strong because of a major grant that the California Highway Patrol received this year. The CHP has received a grant of $719,000 from both California and federal governments. The grant is meant to be used specifically to target drunk driving accidents and a range of other violations.

Endorsement of drunk driving laws will be extra strong over the weekend and especially on highways 178 and 50. According to the California Highway Patrol, large concentrations of officers will be stationed at checkpoints on these two highways between 6 PM and 11:30 PM on Memorial Day.

The special grant for highways 58 and 178 comes because of a spike in the number of fatalities on these two highways. Between 2005 and 2008, a total of 11 people were killed in alcohol-related accidents on these two highways. Besides, a total of 134 people were injured in drunk driving accidents on highways 58 and 178. That is why there is an increased thrust on safety on the two highways. This increased focus on highways 58 and 178 will begin with the Memorial Day weekend, and is expected to continue over the course of the next year. More numbers of California Highway Patrol officers on the highways will help reduce the numbers of people drinking and driving on these roads.

In 2008, one person was killed in a drunk driving accident on those two highways, and 30 people were injured. The official goal is to reduce the number of injuries to 21, and fatalities to no more than one. However, the real goal is to have no accidents on these highways at all.

California Highway Patrol troopers will be on the highways during the day and night, but will be out in stronger force during night times.  Although they will focus harder on drunk drivers, officers will also be looking for other violations, like failure to wear seatbelts and speeding. California car accident lawyers are also pleased to note that CHP troopers will also be looking hard for people talking on their cell phones while driving, as well as those violating any other traffic safety rules.

It’s not just on highways 58 and 178 that there will be a high risk of accidents this Memorial Day weekend. California injury lawyers would advise all motorists to follow these safe driving habits:

  • Always drive at safe speeds.
  • Always wear seatbelts
  • Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Motorists must understand that the roads will be full of people in a party mood this weekend. That means those who are willing to drive drunk and reckless. It’s important to drive with this thought in mind.
