The kind of hazardous chemical exposure that Los Angeles personal injury lawyers have been concerned about could begin as early as in infancy.  A new study has found that 72% of crib mattresses are not safe crib mattresses. They  contained hazardous chemicals that could have deadly health effects.

The study was conducted by environmental health advocacy group, Clean and Healthy New York.  The researchers studied a total of 28 companies that made crib mattresses.  They found that 72% of the mattresses contained one or more hazardous chemicals.  These chemicals included antibacterial chemicals, flame retardants and waterproofing entities.

Altogether, the 28 companies manufactured 190 models of crib mattresses.  About thirty-nine of these models, or 20%, marketed their mattresses as being greener, simply by inserting a thin layer of organic cotton as a barrier between an infant and the crib mattress.  Needless to say, such measures hardly made the mattress safer.

About 22 percent of the companies in the survey refused to disclose the kind of chemicals that were contained in their mattresses.  Therefore, the researchers have not been able to conclude whether these companies’ mattresses contained hazardous chemicals.  According to the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association, it does not certify crib mattresses, but is working on developing voluntary standards for these products.

The fact that crib mattresses that are in such close contact with infants contain hazardous chemicals is definitely a matter of concern to Los Angeles personal injury lawyers.  After all, an infant is asleep for about sixteen hours a day, and is in close contact with something that possibly contains seriously hazardous chemicals.

In fact, the growing exposure of Americans to chemicals in the environment and products that they use every day is a matter of concern for environmental groups.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are approximately 80,000 chemicals that have been registered in the United States, and the agency has been able to test barely 200 of these.

There have been a number of efforts recently initiated to reduce exposure to chemicals.  Already, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been making efforts to reduce the exposure of children to dangerous chemicals.  The agency has already banned the use of phthalates in children’s products.  Phthalates are chemicals that are very often added to plastic products to make them softer.   They are also found in a large range of other children’s products, like shampoos, toys and teething rings.  Additionally, phthalates are also used in household products that are used every day, like air freshener’s.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating the safety of bisphenol A.   This is another chemical that is used widely in plastics, and has been linked to a number of neurological disorders.  Further, lawmakers have been accelerating efforts to require chemical manufacturers to prove the safety of their products.
