The most anticipated season of the year is here, and unfortunately, so is the busiest time of the year for burn units.  The holiday time from Thanksgiving through New Year’s is a high-risk time for  severe burn injuries in California.

Some of the most frequent accidents that give rise to a burn injury during the holiday season are kitchen and cooking-related fires.  Food is a central element of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and family members are likely to spend more time in the kitchen.  Unfortunately, there are distractions galore because of the presence of loved ones.  Doctors advise people who are cooking to stay in the kitchen until they’re done.  Keep inflammable materials away from the stove.  Keep wooden utensils, spoons and ladles, paper towels, packaging, and other inflammable materials away from the tabletop.

Over the next few weeks, millions of Christmas trees will be lit across California.  Not many people know that Christmas trees are an underestimated cause of fires reported every year.  If you’re buying an artificial tree, look for a ‘fire-resistant’ label on the tree.  If you’re buying a live tree, make sure that it’s a fresh one.  A fresh tree will be green in color, and the needles will be harder to pull.  Place your free away from any appliance that is likely to spark a fire, like a fireplace on a radiator.

The risk of a Christmas fire increases when the lights that you use to decorate the tree, are defective.  Make sure the lights are new, and purchased from a reputed manufacturer.  Check that your lights have broken sockets or exposed wiring.  Lights must not have loose connections.  Also, be sure that your extension cord is not overloaded.  Avoid using electrical lighting to decorate metallic trees.

Take precautions during the holiday season to avoid fires.  Make sure that your smoke detectors and sprinklers are working perfectly.  Make sure that the smoke detector batteries are functioning properly.  Keep fire extinguishers at hand.  Chimneys must be cleaned regularly.  Avoid dumping gift wrapping paper and other kinds of inflammable materials in your fireplace.
