Retailers are pulling the enfamil newborn infant formula off of their shelves after the death of a Missouri baby

It’s not just Wal-Mart that is taking action after the death of a Missouri baby who contracted a deadly bacterial infection after consuming Enfamil Newborn infant formula.

San Diego personal injury lawyers have noted that other retailers are also moving to remove the formula from shelves. So far, Safeway, Kroger Co. Supervalu Inc. and Walgreen Inc. have confirmed that they have removed 2.5 ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn from the shelves.  The cans belonging to lot number ZP1K7G are being pulled off store shelves around the country.

A 10-day-old baby in Lebanon, Missouri died over the weekend after contracting a deadly and rare bacterial infection.  Hospital tests found that the infection was caused by the Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.  Investigators have not confirmed the source of the contamination, but the bacteria is typically found in powdered milk and dried milk. Cronobacter sakazakii is also very often found in wheat and rice.

The baby’s formula had been bought at a Wal-Mart store in Lebanon.  Soon after the baby’s death was confirmed, Wal-Mart announced that it was pulling Enfamil Newborn from 3,000 stores across the country.

Meanwhile, federal health regulators will soon begin an investigation into the baby’s death.  The retailers are not waiting for the investigation to be complete.  Several other retailers have announced that they plan to withdraw the formula from many of their stores across the country.  These products will be held until federal regulatory authorities or the manufacturer of the product provide further guidance.

The Enfamil Newborn infant formula has also been linked to another case in Missouri.  In that case, the infant fell ill last month, but has since recovered.  That infection has not been linked to Enfamil Newborn powdered milk.  However, officials are investigating that case also.  At this point in time, the Food and Drug Administration says that there is not enough information to connect the death of the Missouri boy, with the other case.  Meanwhile, similar cases coming in from around the country are also getting health officials moving.  The death of a 25-year-old infant in Illinois has not been linked to contaminated Enfamil Newborn, but health officials are already testing his formula for Cronobacter sakazakii.

Mead Johnson Nutrition Company insists that the product is safe.  The company says that 2 separate samples of the Enfamil Newborn found no traces of the bacteria.  The samples were taken from the same lot as the Enfamil Newborn that was given to the 10-day-old Missouri boy who died.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this particular bacteria is very rare, and sickens 4 to 6 people every year.
