Researchers are close in discovering a vaccine for the norovirus

Los Angeles food poisoning lawyers have good news to report in the war against food-borne pathogens.  Researchers, who have been working on a vaccine against the norovirus stomach bug, have reported progress.

Trials of the norovirus food poisoning vaccine have found that persons who receive the vaccine may be at a lower risk of contracting the infection, and could also suffer from a less intense form of the infection.

The results of the study have been reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine studied about 90 volunteers who took the experimental norovirus vaccine.  The 90 volunteers were aged between 18 and 50 years, and approximately 50% of them were administered the experimental vaccine in 2 oral doses, while the other 50% were administered a placebo.

The researchers found that after a period of about 3 weeks after the 2nd dose, 84 of the subjects in the study were exposed to the norovirus.  Among the persons who had taken the vaccine, 61% became infected with norovirus poisoning.  Approximately 37% developed symptoms of gastroenteritis of the stomach.  Additionally, the persons who had received the vaccine had milder symptoms than the ones who had taken the placebo.  Among the persons who had taken to placebo, 82% of the persons became infected with norovirus poisoning.  Approximately 69% developed symptoms of gastroenteritis.

Researchers are concluding that not only does the vaccine reduce the chances of contracting the infection, but it also reduces the severity of the illness, and leads to milder symptoms.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 21 million people in the United States every year contract the norovirus bug.  This is one of the most common food borne pathogens in the country.  Norovirus spreads especially quickly in confined settings, like on cruise ships.

The germ mainly spreads through contaminated food and water.  Persons may be infected when they touch contaminated surfaces.  People of all age groups are susceptible to norovirus poisoning.  Most people with the virus, however, will recover within a period of 1 to 2 days.  The elderly, those with weakened immune systems, children and people who are suffering suffer from other illnesses however, may be at a higher risk of dehydration.

Symptoms of norovirus poisoning include severe and acute abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.  The only treatment for this infection is increase fluid intake, so that the person can avoid dehydration.  Norovirus is also devastatingly quick spreading.  On a cruise ship, where hundreds of people are close to each other, passengers can fall sick and begin showing symptoms of an infection within a couple of days after contamination of the ship.
