Television Wall Mounts Recalled Due to Fall Injury Hazards

Recalled TV Mounts

If you have Sanus Vision Mount, it may be recalled.

It’s not the sort of thing you want to think about while watching  TV, but if your flatscreen TV has been held up using the Sanus Vision Mount models, it  could possibly fall off the wall.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission in association with Minnesota-based Milestone AV Technologies has recalled more than 130,000 units of flatscreen television wall mounts.  The recall is linked to defects that could cause the television to tilt, and possibly fall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the problem is with the elbow joint components on the mount’s arm.  If these do not fit properly, the television is likely to tilt.  It might even fall off causing injury.  So far, there have been no reported incidents of injuries caused from televisions falling off after disintegration of the mounts.

The models included in the recall are the Sanus Vision Mount Model LF228 B1 wall mounts and Simplicity model SLF2.  These mounts were sold specifically for flatscreen televisions.  The Sanus Vision Mount was sold through independent dealers between June 2009 and July 2010.  The Simplicity mount was sold through Costco between June 2009 and July 2010.  These mounts were manufactured in China.

According to Milestone AV Technologies, internal inspections revealed that a limited number of Simplicity mounts experienced slippage in the elbow joints.  In a press release, the company advises consumers that they must conduct a self inspection to find out if their mount has a problem.  According to Milestone, only a small number of the Simplicity mounts have this defect.

California personal injury lawyers would add yet another hazard to a long list of injury risks involving furniture and appliances.  Injuries caused by televisions falling over, falls from tables, cribs and changing tables and other furniture-related hazards are far too common in American homes.

According to a study conducted last year by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio, approximately 264,200 children were injured in furniture-related accidents including tip overs between 1990 and 2007.  The study indicated that the number of such accidents is actually increasing.  For instance, the number of children being rushed to emergency rooms for treatment of injuries from falling furniture increased from 12,012 cases in 1990 to 16,950 cases in 2007.  That was an increase of 41%, a shocking spike for any parent and California product liability lawyer.  Those increases remained constant even when the researchers adjusted for increases in population over this period of time.  The researchers confirmed that the study was evidence that not enough is being done to prevent furniture-related injuries in American homes.

Approximately 75% of these injuries involved children aged below six years.  Children aged below nine were most likely to be injured by falling televisions.  Head and neck injuries were the most common injuries associated with falling furniture.  Older children were more likely to be injured in accidents involving cabinets and bookshelves.
