Recall of Bed Canopies Due to Injury Hazards

The CPSC has announced a recall of bed canopies due to high risks of injuring people

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of bed canopies because of the risk that the canopies can detach and fall, possibly injuring people.  The canopies were reported by Pottery Barn Kids.

A total of approximately 7, 700 bread canopies are included in the recall.  Apart from these, approximately 250 canopies have been recorded in Canada.  The Canopy is part of the Marleen Bedroom Collection imported by Pottery Barn Kids.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the connections of the posts to the top rails can detach, and this can cause the canopy to collapse and fall.  Consumers on the bed may be at risk of injury.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Pottery Barn Kids are aware of at least 33 reports in which the canopies fell.  In at least one incident, the person suffered injuries, including a cut that required stitches.  There’ve also been at least 9 other reports of minor injuries that include cuts, bruises and bumps.

The canopy is made of wood and comprises a total of 4 posts that are connected to the headboard and support.  The canopies are available in twin, full, and Queen sized models.  They come in white, blade green, antique white, Sun Valley blade green and Sun Valley espresso colors.  These canopies were sold at Pottery Barn Kids stores across the country.  They were also sold online at PotteryBarnKids.com, as well as through Pottery Barn Kids catalogs.  They were sold between December 2003 and August 2011.

The canopies are manufactured in Vietnam.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising consumers who own these canopies to remove the canopy from the bed.  You can contact your nearest Pottery Barn Kids for free repairs.  You can also call the Pottery Barn Kids toll-free number at 855-662-4114.

Hopefully, the recall of bed canopies will be implemented in time, and consumers will be protected from risk of injury.  However, San Diego personal injury lawyers have noticed an increase in the number of furniture-related accidents being reported recently.  Children may be at a special risk of furniture-related injuries.  Children may be trapped in toy chests, or suffer injuries when bureaus and chests topple on top of them.  Additionally, children may be at a special risk of television tipovers.  When the TV is not secured properly to a table, a child can easily pull a television onto himself or herself.  The TV can be heavy enough to cause serious injury to a child or even death.
