Experts are recommending that the Food and Drug Administration strengthen its warning for the antismoking drug, Chantix. Experts Warn about psychological side effects from Chantix. According to the experts, there is enough data to indicate that using the drug increases suicidal behavior and a person’s risk for depression much more than any other drugs used to quit smoking.

Los Angeles defective products lawyers have been raising questions about the safety of Chantix since 2007.  Chantix quickly became popular as a means for smokers to kick the habit.  However, complaints linking the use of the drug to a number of psychological disorders, including depression, suicidal tendencies and suicidal fantasies began to emerge.  The use of Chantix has also been linked to vision problems and cardiovascular issues.  Patients who have used Chantix have also reported a number of other problems, including nightmares, violent behavior and other psychological effects.

In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration was concerned enough about the effects of Chantix use to require a black box warning label on the drug.  This is the most serious warning that can be posted on any pharmaceutical product.  The black box warning cautioned doctors and patients about the severe health risks from the use of Chantix.

A study that has now been published in the journal PLoS claims that the use of Chantix is more dangerous than even its closest competitor, Zyban.  Researchers in the study studied more than 3,000 reports of depression and suicidal behaviors brought about by the use of Chantix, Zyban and other nicotine replacement drugs.  The researchers found that 90% were linked to Chantix.  Further, researchers found that 92% of reports of completed suicides from the use of these drugs were linked to Chantix.

The data came from the Food and Drug Administration’s Adverse Event Reporting System, and included suicide, depression and suicidal behaviors between 1998 and 2010.  This shows that the Food and the Drug Administration’s own data proves the dangers from Chantix use.

The Food and Drug Administration however continues to insist that the drug is safe and an effective way to help smokers quit smoking.  Moreover, the agency say that the researchers failed to take into consideration the increase in psychological symptoms from Chantix use after the side effects from the drug became widely known in 2007.  Pfizer, which manufactures Chantix also insists that studies are flawed, and that the drug is reliable and safe.  However, the company says that at the Food and Drug Administration’s request, it is conducting a clinical trial into the link between Chantix and psychological side effects.  The results of the trial will be out only in 2017.
