Probiotics may help in the treatment of traumatic brain injury

A new study finds that probiotics supplied to a person with traumatic brain injury could help in the process of recovery, and improve patient outcomes.  The study was conducted by researchers at the Third Military Medical University School of Nursing and the North Sichuan Medical College and Hospital in China.

According to the researchers, brain injury is linked to a severe suppression of a patient’s ability to fight infections.  Patients, who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, also suffer from hyper inflammation because the brain releases glucocorticoids after the injury.  The patient suffers prolonged immunological dysfunction during a shift from T helper 1 cells to T helper 2 cells.  During this shift, patients may be exposed to the risk of a number of infections like sepsis, and other adverse outcomes.

The researchers believe that supplying a traumatic brain injury patient with probiotic nutrients through a feeding tube can help improve patient outcomes.  Probiotics are micro organisms that have significant health benefits.  The researchers studied 52 patients who had suffered a traumatic brain injury.  The patients had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, and were rated on a Glasgow Coma Scale of between 6 and 8.

Out of these, 26 patients were in the control group and 26 patients were administered the probiotics.  All patients were given the nutrition via a feeding tube within 2 days of the injury.  However, the probiotics group received an additional 190 viable probiotics.  This probiotic infusion continued every day over 21 days.

The researchers found that those patients who had suffered a brain injury and were given probiotics via a feeding tube showed increased interferon levels and suffered fewer infections.  These patients also spent lower time in intensive care.
