Pre-Drinking Before Night Out Is a Risk Factor for DUI

According to a new study conducted by Swiss researchers, such pre-drinking before a night out is much more likely to result in unprotected sex. “Pre-drinking” is nothing but drinking cheap alcoholic beverages before heading out the door.

Many college students, who go out to a club, party or sporting event, choose to engage in a ritual called “pre-drinking,” before they head out to the venue.  “Pre-drinking” is nothing but drinking cheap alcoholic beverages before heading out the door.  Car accident lawyers believe that such practices increase the risk of dangerous alcohol-related behaviors, like drunk driving and sexual assaults.

According to a new study conducted by Swiss researchers, such pre-drinking before a night out is much more likely to result in unprotected sex.  It is also more likely to result in driving under the influence of alcohol, increasing the risks of being involved in an accident.  Pre-drinking is also linked to blackouts, and drug use.

The researchers analyzed the drinking habits of more than 250 students in Switzerland.  These subjects were surveyed using the Internet and cell phone text messages over a period of 5 weeks.

The researchers found that when students drank alcoholic beverages just before they went out to a bar or club, they ended up drinking much more than they would normally.  On an average, college students who choose to drink alcohol before they went out to a venue consumed 7 beverages.  In comparison, students who drank only at the venue like the bar or the sporting event drank 4 beverages.

College students who engage in pre-drinking are at a much higher risk for hangovers, blackouts, and other dangerous effects, like alcohol poisoning.  They are also much more likely to be at risk for driving under the influence of alcohol, which is one of the top factors in fatal accidents in the United States.

Students who drank only at the event had an 18% chance of suffering some kind of negative consequence, while students who drank alcohol before going to the event had a 24% chance of negative consequences.
