Poway Man Killed in Bicycle Accident

Poway Bicycle Accident

A Poway man killed in a bicycle accident.

A Poway bicyclist has been killed in an accident caused by an SUV that went out of control.  According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, the bicyclist was killed at the scene of the accident.  The 40-year-old man leaves behind a wife and two children.

The SUV seemed to go out of control, and climbed onto the bike lane.  Another bicyclist who was in the lane was also struck by the SUV.  That bicyclist has been injured.  So far, there’s no indication that alcohol or drug use was a factor in the accident, and no charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV.

Bicyclists in California cannot be complacent about their safety, and this summer, the danger to their safety could be even higher.  More bicyclists can be expected out in California streets during the warm months ahead, and for San Diego bicycle accident attorneys, that simply means more numbers of bicycle accidents to be concerned about.

For one thing, bicyclists in California will now have to share the roads with an increasing number of motorists, many of who are headed to holiday destinations with families and dogs in tow, and with safety the last thing on their minds.  Additionally, bicyclists can expect more teen drivers on the roads this summer.  Studies indicate that teenage drivers drive more during the summer months.

For bicyclists, it’s important to be visible in traffic to prevent or minimize the risks of an accident.  The only way to do that is to wear brightly colored clothing and helmets.  Try to avoid riding at night, and if you have to do so, wear reflective clothing and vests.  Stick reflective tape to your bicycle.  Avoid driving too close to parked cars, to avoid accidents that result when a driver opens the car door onto a bicyclist.  Such situations contribute to a large number of injuries in bicycle accidents every year.

Bicyclists in California must also remember to wear a helmet every time they go riding.  Your bicycle helmet must be a well fitting one that meets safety specifications, and is manufactured by a reputed company.  Avoid distractions like listening to your iPod while bicycling.  If your children also ride, make them wear bicycle helmets too.  Remember, during an accident, your helmet may be the only thing standing between you and traumatic brain injury.

Motorists must remember to look out for bicyclists this summer.  Look out especially closely for them near crowded intersections.  Often bicycle accidents are caused by motorists while they’re pulling out of a parking lot.

A bicycle accident can leave a person with serious injuries, including fractures and broken ribs, lacerations, and painful road rash.  A victim may also suffer traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.  These are serious long-term injuries that can leave a bicyclist with a seriously reduced quality of life.
