Los Angeles Police Thinking of How to Prevent Accidents Including Bicyclists and Motorists

How to prevent accidents

Motorists and bicyclists should take more care

The Los Angeles Police Department is warning about a sudden increase in accidents in the central region of the city, and is trying to find how to prevent accidents. First of all motorists and bicyclists should take more care.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there has been a drop of 4% in bicycle accidents across the city of Los Angeles this year.  However, in the central region of the city, there has actually been a spike in bicycle accidents.  However, those statistics could be weak, and don’t account for the fact there are more numbers of bicyclists now, possibly leading to increased accidents.

Nevertheless the, Los Angeles Department has issued a warning to both motorists and bicyclists to share the road safely with each other.  At a news conference this week, the Los Angeles Police Department asked everyone to continue toward making Los Angeles a bicycle-friendly city.

This conference comes just a few days after the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance that would substantially increase safety for bicyclists in the city.  According to the ordinance passed by the Los Angeles City Council, motorists who physically or verbally harass or abuse bicyclists can have charges pressed against them.  Under the ordinance, persons who indulge in such inactions against bicyclists can have criminal charges filed against them.  The ordinance also allows bicycle accident victims to file lawsuits against drivers, without having to wait for the city to press criminal charges against the driver first.

Los Angeles has a poor record as far as bicycle safety is concerned.  The city has seen a number of incidents involving hostility between bicyclists and motorists, and some of these incidents have ended with serious consequences.  It was in Los Angeles two years ago that a doctor pulled out in front of two bicyclists in a fit of road rage.  The bikers ended up suffering serious injuries.  The doctor in that case was found guilty and sentenced.  That incident focused nationwide attention on the increasingly hostile environment in which motorists and bicyclists use Los Angeles streets.

Bicyclists in Los Angeles have always complained about the lack of cooperation they see from police officers, especially when they report an accident.  According to many bicyclists in Los Angeles, police officers don’t take their concerns about safety very seriously.

The Los Angeles Police Department has been trying to rectify that situation.  Last year, the Department confirmed that it was looking at measures to increase safety for bicyclists, including training police officers to better handle bicycle accident complaints.  It’s too early to tell whether any of these measures have had an effect on lowering bicycle accidents in the city, but Los Angeles bicycle accident attorneys have been pleased to note the development of new measures, like the anti-harassment ordinance, to help protect bicyclists.
