Police Investigating Fatal Hit-And-Run Pedestrian Accident in Los Angeles

March 31st, 2010

It’s the kind of situation that a Los Angeles accident lawyer comes across all too often.  A man was killed early on Monday morning in yet another hit-and-run accident in downtown Los Angeles. According to news reports, the man was crossing Alameda Street when he was struck by a vehicle. The car then sped off without stopping at the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Police have some information about the identity of the vehicle involved in this accident. The vehicle is likely to be a dark-colored sedan. Authorities are looking for a car that has some damage in the front from the impact with the pedestrian. The Los Angeles Police Department is calling anyone with any information on the accident or any witnesses to contact the LAPD.

Traffic was likely very low at 3 AM in the morning when the accident occurred. It is highly unlikely that the driver didn’t even realize he had struck a pedestrian. Unfortunately, California injury lawyers see this kind of situation too often. It is far too easy for a motorist to strike a pedestrian or bicyclist, and then speed off from the scene of the accident. Hit-and-run accidents are becoming increasingly common in collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists in California.

Bicyclists group in California have been extremely concerned about the growing numbers of hit-and-run accidents involving bikers. Pedestrians and bikers are the most vulnerable users of our roads. Although they do have rights under the law, they suffer from a lack of knowledge about their rights. Very often, law-enforcement officers are also clueless about how to handle hit-and-run pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

California car accident attorneys have also noticed an unfortunate trend. There seems to be a tendency to blame pedestrians or bikers for any crashes involving pedestrians. The very first question that seems to come up after an accident involving these people is whether the pedestrian or the biker was following all rules of the road at the time of the crash.

California accident lawyers often see that even when pedestrians and bicyclists are following all safety rules, they’re still victims of serious accidents involving negligent motorists. Bicyclists groups in California can draw some comfort from the fact that there is now increased focus on the need for more bicycle safety in California. The Los Angeles Police Department has found itself at the center of growing controversy and criticism from bicycle groups and car accident lawyers in California over the unsafe environment that bicyclists in California face. The Los Angeles police Department chief has promised that his department will focus on bicycle safety laws, including training police officers to handle bicycle accident cases sensitively.

Accident lawyers in California will hope that the Los Angeles Police Department takes a stronger view of the high numbers of pedestrian collisions in the city.  There’s no reason why walking in Los Angeles should be a risky or dangerous activity.
