Pharmaceutical and Food Product Recalls Increase in Third Quarter of 2011

Food Product Recalls

The number one factor in food recalls in the third quarter of 2011 was undeclared allergens

Pharmaceutical and food product recalls spiked in the third quarter of 2011, a development that Los Angeles defective product lawyers will attribute at least in part to greater oversight and more awareness.

According to data from the ExpertRECALL index, food recalls in the third quarter of 2011 were up to six times the recalls recorded in the second part of this year.  The number one factor in food recalls in the third quarter of 2011 was undeclared allergens.  These accounted for about half of all food product recalls during this period of time.

The second-leading cause of food recalls in third quarter 2011 was listeria contamination.  Listeria was a factor in about 25% of all food product recalls during this period of time.   Listeria Monocytogenes was linked to several product recalls in the third quarter, the biggest recall involving the cantaloupes recall.  At least two dozen people have been confirmed dead in a nationwide listeriosis epidemic that has been linked to contaminated cantaloupes from a farm in Colorado.

Pharmaceutical recalls also increased in the third quarter of 2011.  Drug recalls by the Food and Drug Administration increased by more than 54% in the third quarter.  In the second quarter of 2011, there had been just ninety-seven callbacks, and these increased to 150 callbacks in the third quarter.  According to the ExpertRECALL index, the number of pharmaceutical recalls was higher than all the other recalls that the index measures, including food products, drugs and medical devices, children’s and infant products, and consumer products.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the increase in pharmaceutical recalls is an indication of the fact that the agency has now increased oversight of manufacturing plants and operations inside the United States.  In fact, Los Angeles product liability attorneys believe that the number of recalls is likely to increase further, as the Food and Drug Administration gears up to conduct more inspections of overseas facilities too.  The Government Accountability Office in a recent report called on the Food And Drug Administration to intensify inspections of manufacturing facilities overseas.  For a long time, these overseas manufacturing facilities had been neglected, and few inspections have been conducted.

Consumer safety experts are calling on manufacturers to focus harder on safety now that holiday shopping will increase.  People will now buy products not just for themselves, but also as gifts for loved ones.  Manufacturers need to be ready to act on communicating with consumers whenever there are any safety concerns about particular products over the holiday season.  Consumers must also stay alert for product recalls over the holiday shopping season.
