Pediatricians Advise Against Boxing to Prevent Brain Injuries

Boxing Brain Injuries

The risk of suffering brain injuries is simply too high for children in boxing

A pediatrics group is warning against allowing children to participate in boxing, to reduce the incidence of boxing brain injuries involving children.  According to the American Association of Pediatrics, the risk of suffering brain injuries is simply too high for children in boxing.

According to the American Association of Pediatrics, children should be steered towards other sports like swimming, basketball and baseball, and away from sports like boxing.  There are approximately 18,000 children and teenagers in the United States currently involved in amateur boxing.

The American Association of Pediatrics is quoting from the results of a study analyzing data from between 1980 and 1997.  According to the data, there were 600 deaths from boxing-related injuries during this time.  Almost all of these deaths were due to acute head trauma.  All of these deaths involved adults, but according to the American Association of Pediatrics, the danger to children is even higher because these children are vulnerable to the effects of concussions.

A person who participates in boxing is likely to suffer multiple blows to the head.  An estimated 6.5% to 51.6% of injuries in boxing involve concussions.  Repeated concussions over a period of time can lead to brain injury.  The researchers warn that there is enough evidence to show that a child’s brain is more vulnerable to a brain injury than adults.

Los Angeles brain injury lawyers are also aware of evidence that indicates that a child’s recovery period after a brain injury is much longer than that of an adult.  In one study involving high school and college athletes, researchers found that older athletes who suffered concussions were able to recover in just three days, while younger athletes suffered cognitive problems for as many as ten days after the injury.  These victims were much more likely to suffer memory dysfunction and other problems for days after the injury.

The reason for this is that younger brains have lower quantities of an insulating protein called myelin.  This protein surrounds the brain cells, offering them protection during an injury.  In the absence of this protein, the brain is likely to suffer an injury with a long-term impact.

According to studies, people who suffer repetitive minor concussions suffer from long-term problems with memory.  There may also be other forms of brain dysfunction.  The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Pediatric Society have the following advice for parents.

Parents must be aware of the possible risks and hazards when children participate in boxing.  Schools and coaches must also be aware of these risks, and must inform parents of these.  Parents and caregivers must encourage children to participate in other kinds of sports where the danger of suffering a brain injury is low.

Medical professionals must be present during a boxing match, and must attend to teenage boxers before, during and after a match.  Teenage boxers should also be regularly screened for neurogenerative problems.
