Pedestrian Death during Fourth Of July Celebrations in Valencia

July 8th, 2010

Pedestrian death on fourth of july

The Fourth of July celebrations quickly turned into a pedestrian death when a pedestrian who was watching the fireworks display at the Valencia Town Center. According to the Los Angeles Times, a car spun out of control and plowed into a group of pedestrians who were watching the fireworks show.

According to officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, two cars collided with each other on Valencia Blvd. at just past 10:40 pm on Fourth of July. The impact caused one of the vehicles to jump the curb, and strike a group of pedestrians. There was one pedestrian death after one lady was seriously injured. The 40-year-old woman, a Santa Clarita resident died from her injuries. Two of her children, who were also watching the fireworks show with their mother, were also injured. They had to be airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and are reported to be in a critical condition. Besides these two children, five other children were also injured in the pedestrian accident.

Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened, and witnesses have been asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Currently, investigators believe that the accident occurred because one of the drivers ran a red light. It was then struck by the second vehicle, which sent the first vehicle out of control and into the crowd. The drivers of the two cars have not suffered any injuries. As of now, no charges have been filed.

If the investigation does indeed prove that the accident was caused because one of the cars ran a red light, it’s yet more proof that we need to continue support for red light camera systems across California. Support for these cameras oscillates between strong support from California car accident lawyers and others who know that red light violations contribute to thousands of accidents every year, and those who believe these systems are only meant to generate revenues for  law enforcement agencies.

There is no doubt that red light camera systems can be a revenue generating tool and at times like these, the funds that are generated from these systems, are very welcome. However  the biggest advantage of these systems is the fact that they encourage motorists to respect traffic signs and obey them. This obedience of traffic rules is a major factor in automobile accidents in California every year, and among these violations, red light violations are among the most frequent ones.

Opposing red light camera systems simply because they make money for local law enforcement authorities is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Red light camera systems and speeding camera systems are one more tool that law enforcement authorities have to crack down on offending drivers. Failure to obey traffic rules can lead to devastating consequences, as can be seen in this accident which left one woman dead and two children critically injured.
