Smaller Organic Farms May Not Be Free from Organic Food Poisoning

Organic Food Poisoning

Many consumers may be under the mistaken belief that produce from smaller, local facilities may be much safer

An outbreak of organic food poisoning traced to an organic farm in Minnesota indicates to Los Angeles food poisoning lawyers that smaller farms producing organic produce may not necessarily be safer than large-scale corporatized farms.

In Minnesota, a massive recall of eggs has been announced, after six people contracted salmonella food poisoning from eating organic eggs.  The eggs were traced to the Larry Shultz Organic Farm of Owatonna.  Tests have confirmed that the eggs produced at the farmer were contaminated with the salmonella organism.

The Minnesota Department Of Agriculture is investigating the outbreak.  Six people have been confirmed to have contracted salmonella food poisoning.  These people bought the eggs from grocery stores, and became infected between August and September.  Three of the victims have been hospitalized, but have made a complete recovery.  The eggs were distributed to restaurants and grocery stores in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin.

This food poisoning outbreak in Minnesota should raise questions about the safety of eating produce that is marketed as being safe and organic.  With a number of food poisoning reports in the media recently, consumers have become increasingly discerning about the safety of the produce they buy.  Many of them have begun to gravitate towards produce that is marked as being safe and organic and manufactured by small local farms.

Many consumers may be under the mistaken belief that produce from smaller, local facilities may be much safer, because owners and operators are more likely to maintain quality.  However, as the Minnesota outbreak shows, these assumptions may be dangerous. Recent food poisoning outbreaks have been linked to cantaloupe, eggs and peanuts processed at large corporations across the country.  This has fostered a belief that food that is sourced from organic farms is safer.

The federal administration’s food safety laws tend to focus on large-scale operations.  These include large scale farms, food processing companies, retailers, restaurant chains and other companies.  However, the federal administration has tended to ignore the food poisoning risks that exist in smaller companies.

Los Angeles food poisoning lawyers find that there are gaps in the system that allow smaller farms and facilities to escape oversight from the agency.  No one expects the Food and Drug Administration to inspect every single egg from every small local farm.  However, the existing laws need to be strengthened so that people who buy their produce from smaller facilities can do so without fear of food poisoning.  This is even more important because an increasing number of Americans now buy organic produce.  According to a survey, approximately 78% of Americans admit to frequently choosing organic produce and food.
