NTSB Urges Cell Phone Ban for Truck Drivers

September 20th, 2011
Cell phone ban for commercial truck drivers

The ban is a safety measure to help prevent accidents.

After recommending a ban on texting while driving for commercial truck drivers, and getting the Department of Transportation to announce such a ban, the National Transportation Safety Board now recommends a cell phone ban for truck drivers to prevent them from using their phones while driving.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, commercial truck drivers must be prohibited from using cell phones while driving, except during emergency situations.  The Board is against the use of both hand-held cell phones, as well as hands-free sets.  Last year, the Department Transportation had announced a ban on texting while driving for all commercial drivers.

For the National Transportation Safety Board, the call for a ban on all kinds of cell phone use by commercial drivers comes after a deadly accident last year in Kentucky that killed eleven people and was ultimately traced to a cell phone-wielding truck driver.  In that accident, the truck crashed through a median, and struck a passenger van.  There were twelve people in the van, and out of these, ten were killed.

When the National Transportation Safety Board investigated this tragedy, it looked through the driver’s cell phone records, and found that he had used his cell phone at least 69 times while driving.  The last phone call was made just as his truck crashed through the median.

The NTSB has pushed for a cell phone ban for truck drivers as a serious transportation safety measure.  In 2002, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended a ban on cell phone use while driving for teen motorists.  In 2004, after a deadly bus accident traced to distracted driving, the Board recommended a ban on cell phones for all bus drivers.  Last year, the Board recommended a ban on texting devices for all boat operators after a deadly boat accident on the Delaware River.  In California, the Metrolink train accident near Chatsworth was linked to a train engineer who was distracted by his cell phone, and ran a red light.  The National Transportation Safety Board recommended that all train engineers and other important crew on the train train be banned from using texting devices while operating a train.

Los Angeles trucking accident lawyers have been encouraged to see that the trucking  industry is in agreement with the National Transportation Safety Board.  The American Trucking Associations says that it agrees with the Board’s Recommendations.

A ban on cell phone use while driving for all commercial truck and bus drivers only makes sense.  There are enough studies to prove that a ban on hand-held cell phones alone may not reduce the risk of accidents, because the distraction comes from the conversation that the person is having on his cell phone, and not from whether he is using his hands or not.
