NTSB Plans Series of Sessions to Tackle Aviation Safety Issues

August 25th, 2011
Aviation Safety issues are a huge concern.

The board is trying to have a more comprehensive overview of the issues.

The National Transportation Safety Board has planned a series of sessions dedicated to aviation safety issues over the next few months.  The Board is not looking at specific plane crashes or near-miss events that have caused concerns, but is rather looking at a comprehensive overview of problems, including structural defects as well as poor oversight of airlines.

Separate sessions are being dedicated to long-standing aviation safety problems.  The sessions will go beyond the National Transportation Safety Board’s usual activities involving investigations of specific incidents.  The sessions will not delve into the reasons for specific near-miss adverse events that have occurred recently.  Rather, the sessions will focus on dangerous trends across aviation safety. According to the National Transportation Safety Board chairperson, her agency is looking at identifying and tracking aviation safety issues before they cause a serious plane crash.

One of the issues that the Board is likely to consider during these sessions is structural integrity.  Issues about structural integrity of planes, especially aging aircraft, have been pronounced after an incident involving a Southwest Airlines plane earlier this year.  In that incident, a Boeing 737 plane had to make an emergency landing in Arizona, after a section of the fuselage ripped off in midair.

Fortunately, no passengers or crewmembers were injured, and the pilots managed a safe landing.  However, for a few minutes, it did seem like a crash was imminent.  At the time of the incident, the plane was cruising at about 34,000 feet.  There were 122 people on board, and you don’t have to be a Los Angeles plane crash lawyer to understand that these people had a very narrow and very fortunate escape.

It was a rare incident, but did increase concerns about the structural integrity of planes.  In this case, the Boeing 737 was fifteen years old.  The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating this particular incident.  During preliminary investigations the agency had blamed manufacturing defects.  The agency had also pointed to misaligned rivet holes and loose bolts in its investigation.  The investigators also found several defects in a section of the fuselage, several feet from the rupture.

There have been other serious incidents involving structural integrity.  Last October, a Boeing 757 American Airlines jet suffered from a similar structural failure.

The National Transportation Safety Board sessions will be looking at how safety methods can be enhanced, and will also determine ways to bridge gaps in supervision and oversight, especially those affecting aircraft that are operated or leased by the government.
